These integrated bathymetric-topographic DEMs are used to support tsunami forecasting and warning efforts at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The DEMs are part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers, and are used in the MOST (Method of Splitting Tsunami) model developed by PMEL to simulate tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation. Bathymetric, topographic, and shoreline data used in DEM compilation are obtained from various sources, including NGDC, the U.S. National Ocean Service (NOS), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other federal, state, and local government agencies, academic institutions, and private companies. DEMs are referenced to the vertical tidal datum of Mean High Water (MHW) and horizontal datum of World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Grid spacings for the DEMs range from 1/3 arc-second (~10 meters) to 3 arc-seconds (~90 meters). Developed for the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), NOAA Center for Tsunami Research program in support of NOAA's tsunami forecasting and warning efforts. completed DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce DEM Information dem.info@noaa.gov pointOfContact asNeeded http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dem/squareCellGrid/getGraphic/592 Perspective view of DEM JPEG Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Seafloor Topography Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Bathymetry Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Water Depth Earth Science > Land Surface > Topography > Terrain Elevation Earth Science > Land Surface > Topography > Topographical Relief Earth Science > Oceans > Coastal Processes > Coastal Elevation theme NASA/GCMD Earth Science Keywords DEM > Digital Elevation Model theme NASA/GCMD Platform Keywords DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce WDC/MGG, BOULDER > World Data Center for Marine Geology and Geophysics, Boulder theme NASA/GCMD Data Center Keywords H: 1 meter - < 30 meters V: < 1 meter theme NASA/GCMD Data Resolution Keywords Coastal Relief Gridded elevations Integrated bathymetry and topography theme Uncontrolled Continent > North America > United States of America > Maine Ocean > North Atlantic Ocean Vertical Location > Gulf of Maine Vertical Location > Sea Floor place NASA/GCMD Location Keywords Bar Harbor Mount Desert Island Acadia National Park Blue Hill Somes Sound Winter Harbor place Uncontrolled Not to be used for navigation. Topography: 10 meters. Positional accuracy of input topographic datasets limits accuracy of corresponding cell values in DEM. USGS NED DEM: 10 meters. City of Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park Stereophotogrammetry: 10 meters. DEM cell-value relative-contribution factors: USGS NED DEM: 100, City of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park Stereophotogrammetry: 100. Bathymetry: 10 to a few hundreds of meters. Positional accuracy of input bathymetric datasets limits accuracy of corresponding cell values in DEM. Multibeam sonar: 2-5 meters. ENC and NOS hydrographic soundings: Early 20th-century soundings are limited by sparseness of deep-water soundings, and potentially large positional accuracy errors of pre-satellite (i.e., GPS) navigation: 1 to several tens of meters. Morphologic change along the coast also degrades the positional accuracy of ENC and NOS sounding values. DEM cell-value relative-contribution factors: Multibeam sonar data: 100, NOS hydrographic soundings: 10, ENC hydrographic soundings: 1. Vertical Positional Accuracy Report The vertical accuracy of bathymetric and topographic features in the DEM is dependent upon the DEM cell size and the accuracy of the input datasets used to determine corresponding cell values. Topography: up to 15 meters. Vertical accuracy of input topographic datasets limits accuracy of corresponding cells in DEM. USGS NED DEM: 7-15 meters. Bathymetry: 0.1 meters to 5% of water depth. Vertical accuracy of input bathymetric datasets limits accuracy of corresponding cells in DEM. Multibeam sonar: about 0.1 meter. Early 20th-century ENC and NOS hydrographic soundings are limited by sparseness of deep-water soundings, and potentially large positional accuracy errors of pre-satellite (i.e., GPS) navigation: several meters. Where present, multibeam sonar data supersede ENC and NOS hydrographic sounding data values in DEM. DEM cell relative-contribution factors: Multibeam sonar data: 100, NOS hydrographic soundings: 10, ENC hydrographic soundings: 1. Gridding interpolation to determine cell values between sparse soundings in deep water degrades the vertical accuracy of some deep-water elevations. NGDC made every effort to obtain all available digital topographic and bathymetric datasets in the region for use in building the DEM. Datasets were visually compared internally and externally (with other overlapping datasets and satellite images and maps) in ESRI ArcGIS and Applied Imagery's QT Modeler for identification of anomalous elevations or data inconsistencies. Where elevation inconsistencies occurred, the most recent and/or highest resolution data set was selected for use in that region. Older elevation surveys and/or lower-resolution datasets were deleted prior to building the DEM. All datasets obtained by NGDC were converted to common horizontal and vertical datums using FME and VDatum. They were also converted to common file formats for visualization and inspection. 2011-06-15T00:00:00 Barry W. Datasets were then compared with overlapping datasets to ensure data consistency. 2011-06-15T00:00:00 Coastline datasets were merged and adjusted to fit most current lidar topographic zero elevation line. 2011-06-24T00:00:00 xyz files of the bathymetric data were surfaced using GMT's 'surface' tool onto a 1 arc-second grid that interpolated to fill empty cells. Points extracted every 10 meters along the coastline were also included to ensure that the bathymetric grid reached zero at the coast. The resulting Arc ASCII grid was imported into ArcGIS and clipped to the coastline to remove values over land. 2011-07-30T00:00:00 xyz files for each input dataset were gridded using MB-System's 'mbgrid' tool, which utilizes a high-tension spline interpolation method to fill grid cells with no input elevation values. Preferential weighting was given to more recent, higher-accuracy datasets. The grids were imported in ArcGIS and transformed to MHW. 2011-08-15T00:00:00 The DEM was quantitatively evaluated by comparing it with source datasets and with elevation values extracted from NGS geodetic monuments. It was visually evaluated by converting to UTM-zone coordinates (units of meters horizontally and vertically) and then creating a slope grid to identify gridding artifacts in the DEM. 2011-08-20T00:00:00 Source Contribution: topographic DEM ; Source Type: online USGS NED topography 2008-01-01 publication DOI/USGS > U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior originator Citation URL http://ned.usgs.gov/ USGS National Elevation Dataset Digital database of U.S. topography, in raster form (DEM) download 2000-01-01 Source Contribution: Multibeam surveys for Maine coast near Bar Harbor. ; Source Type: online OMG UNB Multibeam Swath Sonar Surveys 2009-01-01 publication University of New Brunswick, Ocean Mapping Group originator Citation URL http://www.omg.unb.ca/omg University of New Brunswick, Ocean Mapping Group Multibeam swath sonar surveys for Blue Hill Bay and Somes Sound download 2008-01-01 2009-01-01 Source Contribution: hydrographic surveys ; Source Type: online NOS Hydrographic Surveys 2008-01-01 publication DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce originator Citation URL http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/bathymetry/hydro.html NOS Hydrographic Survey Database Digital database of NOS hydrographic surveys that date back to the late 19th century. download 1869-01-01 1999-01-01 Source Contribution: Stereophotogrammetric survey of the the town of Bar Harbor and surrounding areas of Acadia National Park ; Source Type: TIN Stereophotogrammetry survey near the town of Bar Harbor. publication City of Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park originator 2009-01-01 annually 2012-12-27 This metadata was automatically generated from the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata: Extensions for Remote Sensing Metadata standard (version FGDC-STD-012-2002) using the 2012-08-07. f version of the FGDC RSE to ISO 19115-2 transform for DEMs. Last Translation from FGDC 2012-08-07T15:56:26.097-06:00 Last Metadata Review Date: 2011-12-27 Kelly Carignan DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce kelly.carignan@noaa.gov pointOfContact Light Detection and Ranging Multibeam Swath Bathymetry System Sound Navigation and Ranging Tsunami Inundation Gridding Project Digital Elevation Model
