1998 Indian Ocean Cyclones

Slides 1 & 2 Cyclone Tiffany Tropical Cyclone Tiffany was a system of near-land origin which drifted westward over the ocean. The cyclone maintained 100 kt winds for 18-24 hours before weakening. Although Tiffany was quite intense and moved fairly close to the Western Australian coastline, it was a small, compact system and its effects on Australia were minimal.

Slides 3 & 4 Cyclone Anacelle Tropical Cyclone Anacelle was the first named cyclone in the South Indian Ocean Basin during the 1998 season. The storm passed near St. Brandon with sustained winds of 90 kt and reached a peak intensity of 115 kt east-southeast of Mauritius on February 11, 1998. There were no reports of casualities or damage.

Slides 5 & 6 Cyclone Victor-Cindy Tropical Cyclone Victor was a redevelopment of the residual low pressure are which had been Tropical Cyclone Katrina in January. The residual low pressure area which was to become Victor passed over the northern coast of Australia and into the Indian Ocean were it strengthened to a tropical cyclone attaining a peak intensity of 75 kt on February 13, 1998. On February 19, 1998 Victor a minimal cyclone in the South Indian Ocean passed into the Mauritius/La Reunion area and was renamed Cindy.

Slides 7 & 8 Cyclone Elsie Elsie was first noticed as a developing tropical system on March 12, 1998 about 850 nm southeast of Diego Garcia. The system moved generally in a south-southwesterly direction for the next five days. It reached a peak intensity of 90 kt on March 13, 1998. Elsie weakened just a quickly as it had intensified and by March 14, 1998 was of minimal hurricane strength. There were no reports of causalities or damage.

Slides 9 & 10 Cyclone 01B 01B developed in the southern Bay of Bengal in mid May. The storm tracked toward southern India before turning northeastward toward Bangladesh. The cyclone reached a maximum intensity of 65kt just before landfall near Chittagong, Bangladesh. The severe cyclone ravaged the low-lying Bangladesh coast killing at least 12 people and destroying thousands of homes. A Chittagong Port Authority official reported a fully loaded oil tanker was damaged in a collision with another ship in the storm.

Slides 11 & 12 Cyclone Gemma Gemma developed as the result of the merging of two tropical depressions both 300-400 nm south-southeast of Diego Garcia. Following the merger Gamma steadily intensified until on April 11, 1999 it reached a peak intensity of with winds of 70 kt. As the system move westward it slowly weakened. There were no reports of causalities or damage.

Slides 13 & 14 Cyclone 03A 03A, the most intense cyclone to strike India in 25 years, formed off the southwest tip of India in early June. The storm tracked westward over the Arabian Sea, then turned north reaching a maximum intensity of 100kt just before making landfall near Porbandar, India. The damage caused by this cyclone was extensive. The NASA sponsored Dartmouth Flood Observatory reported 1126 deaths. Over 15,000 people were dislocated with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. Total damage estimates were nearly 290 million dollars.

Slides 15 & 16 Cyclone Alison The second early season tropical cyclone in the Australian Region developed in a well defined Near Equatorial Trough. Tropical Cyclone Alison initially moved to the southeast near the Cocos Island. As it continued to move to the southeast it increased in intensity reaching its peak with winds estimated at 70 kt on November 9, 1998. There were no reports of damage or deaths associated with Alison.

Slides 17 & 18 Cyclone 06B 06B developed in the Bay of Bengal in mid November and tracked northwestward making landfall in east-central India with a peak intensity of 85kt. It rapidly dissipated while moving north through central India. The storm caused two deaths and extensive crop and property damage in India.

Slides 19 & 20 Cyclone 07B 07B formed over the Bay of Bengal from remnants of tropical storm Chip which had tracked over Vietnam, the Gulf of Thailand and into the Bay of Bengal. The storm reached a peak intensity of 75kt before weakening and making landfall as a minimal tropical storm in Bangladesh. The storm surge associated with tropical storm 07B-98 inundated Bangladesh coastal communities where more than 100 fishermen were report lost.

Slides 21 & 22 Cyclone Billy Tropical Cyclone Billy developed from a low pressure area centered about 180 nm northeast of Brome, Australia. Billy intensified rather quickly reaching its peak on December 4, 1998 with sustained winds of 65 kt. Its center now was about 140 nm north of Karratha. As Billy weaken it moved inland with below gale force winds near Onslow on December 6, 1998.

Slides 23 & 24 Cyclone Thelma Thelma developed from a weak tropical disturbance in the Arafura Sea. From its innocuous beginnings this disturbance would grow into the most intense tropical cyclone to menace Darwin since the incredibly destructive Tracy in 1974. The system intensified to category 5 as it drifted to the south-southeast. Maximum intensity was reached on December 8, 1998 with winds of 135 kt. Fortunately Thelma made landfall in a very sparsely populated area of Western Australia. Heavy rains caused flooding but not reports of casualties were made.

Slides 25 & 26 Cyclone 08A 08A developed slowly but attained a maximum intensity of 65 kt as it track across the Arabian Sea for six days making landfall on the coast of Oman. The storm made landfall with winds of 35kt and dissipated rapidly. No deaths or damage were associated with this cyclone.
