1996 Northwest Pacific Typhoons
With 33 tropical cyclones becoming tropical storms, and 21 of those reaching typhoon strength, 1996 was an above average year for tropical storm activity in the Northwest Pacific basin. The 1968 to 1989 annual average for the Northwest Pacific basin is 25.7 tropical storms with 16.0 reaching typhoon strength. The peak year on record for tropical storms was 1964 with 39 tropical storms, 26 of which became typhoons. In the Northwest Pacific basin, tropical cyclones occur regularly thoughout the year, although there is a distinct minimum in February and the first half of March.
