1 High-resolution Bottom Pressure Recorder (BPR) data from DART(R) station 52401_2006 20061211 to 20061218 The Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART(R)) is an ongoing, multi-agency cooperative effort to maintain and improve the capability for the early detection and real-time reporting of tsunamis in the open ocean. The DART(R) network is an essential component in the provision of timely warnings to U.S. coastal communities. DART(R) data support the NOAA Tsunami Program observation requirements for Tsunami Offshore Real-Time and Post-event observations, as well as Global Water Level Observations. Each DART(R) system consists of an anchored seafloor Bottom Pressure Recorder (BPR) acoustically coupled to a moored surface buoy. Iridium transceivers and the acoustic modems provide real-time communication between each DART(R) system and the Tsunami Warning Centers (TWC) in Ewa Beach, Hawai`i and Palmer, Alaska. Additionally they provide limited communications from the TWC to the BPR. DART(R) BPR packages are deployable for 48 months at depths up to 6000 meters and are typically on a 24-month service schedule. The BPR is recovered by sending a signal to trigger an acoustic release causing it to mechanically separate from the anchor. Flotation brings the unit to the surface, leaving the anchor on the seafloor. Meinig, et. al. (2005) provides a description of DART(R) and its performance characteristics.

    1 Depth The ship-measured depth (meters) of the ocean at which the buoy was moored. The ship-measured depth is not as accurate as the BPR-measured pressure. To obtain the most precise depth, convert the bottom pressure to depth. If value is 99999, depth is unknown.
    1 Latitude of the BPR Latitude is measured from the equator, with positive values going north and negative values going south.
    1 Longitude of the BPR Longitude is measured from the Prime Meridian (which is the longitude that runs through Greenwich, England), with positive values going east and negative values going west.
    1 Threshold The pre-programmed threshold in the bottom pressure recorder. If the water level exceeds this threshold, the tsunami detection algorithm sends the bpr into event recording mode.
    1 Sample_rate This is the period, in minutes, at which the buoy makes a measurement. For the high-resolution data it is 15 seconds (0.25 min), but for the older buoys it is 56.25 seconds. When the BPR is not retrieved, sample rate is 15-min or event mode data.
