2011 NOAA National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Lidar: Fire Island, NY and Cape May to Absecon Inlet, NJ

These data were collected by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Geodetic Survey Remote Sensing Division using a Riegl Q680i-D system. The data includes topographic data in an LAS 1.2 format file classified as unclassified (1), ground (2), and water (9) in accordance with the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) classification standards. This data set also includes lidar intensity values and encoded RGB image values. Fire Island, NY data collected on Nov 25, 2011 and the Cape May to Absecon Inlet, NJ data was collected on July 16, 2011.

    Supplemental Information: Data include all lidar returns. Outliers or false returns (e.g., returns from birds, atmospheric particles, and or system noise) may be present in the data. An automated ground classification algorithm was used to determine bare earth point classification. It should be noted that not all water returns were correctly classified, therefore the ground classification could proceed into water bodies, and should be removed by the user.
    Purpose: This lidar was acquired by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division to support NOAA's Coastal Mapping Program. It is not intended for mapping, charting, or navigation. In addition, it will be used for ongoing research efforts for testing and developing standards for airborne lidar.
    Use Limitations
    • These data depict the elevations at the time of the survey and are only accurate for that time. Users should be aware that temporal changes may have occurred since this data set was collected and some parts of this data may no longer represent actual surface conditions. Users should not use this data for critical applications without a full awareness of its limitations. Any conclusions drawn from analysis of this information are not the responsibility of NOAA or any of its partners. These data are NOT to be used for navigational purposes.

    Processing Steps
    • Data were processed to an initial LAS format using the Riegl RiProcess software. The Applanix POSPac software was utilized for GPS and inertial processing, and Terrasolid software for data visualization, 3D editing, and export to final LAS file. Data were processed in NAD83 horizontal and vertical datum.
    • The NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC) received the files in las format. The files contained LiDAR elevation as well as intensity and encoded RGB image values. The data were in UTM, Zone 18 coordinates. CSC performed the following processing for data storage and Digital Coast provisioning purposes: 1. The data were converted from UTM Zone 18 coordinates to geographic coordinates. 2. The data were filtered for outliers. 3. The data were converted to LAZ format.
    • The NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) received lidar data files via ftp transfer from the NOAA Coastal Services Center. The data are currently being served via NOAA CSC Digital Coast at http://www.csc.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/. The data can be used to re-populate the system. The data are archived in LAS or LAZ format. The LAS format is an industry standard for LiDAR data developed by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS); LAZ is a loseless compressed version of LAS developed by Martin Isenburg (http://www.laszip.org/). The data are exclusively in geographic coordinates (either NAD83 or ITRF94). The data are referenced vertically to the ellipsoid (either GRS80 or ITRF94), allowing for the ability to apply the most up to date geoid model when transforming to orthometric heights.
