As the SORCE (Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment satellite) mission states, far UV irradiance from the Sun varies by as much as 10 percent during the Sun's 27-day rotation, while the bright 121.6 nm hydrogen Lyman-alpha emission may vary by as much as a factor of 2 during an 11-year solar cycle, dramatically affecting the energy input into the Earth's atmosphere. Water vapor and ozone are especially sensitive to changes in the solar UV radiation. Different wavelengths of solar radiation are absorbed at different altitudes in the Earth's atmosphere, affecting different physical processes. As Dr. Jack Eddy notes, we utterly depend on solar radiation. Long term monitoring of its variations over all wavelengths is critical to our understanding of the impacts on our environment. purpose: Solar Ultraviolet Research status: (MD_ProgressCode) underDevelopment pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: Solar Data Manager organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 303.497.6133 or 303.497.6323 facsimile: (303) 497-6513 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC E/GC2 325 Broadway city: Boulder administrativeArea: CO postalCode: 80305 country: USA electronicMailAddress: solar.ngdc@noaa.gov hoursOfService: 7:30 - 4:30 Mountain contactInstructions: Contact Data Center role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) continual descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Earth Science > Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Solar Active Regions keyword: Earth Science > Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Solar Ultraviolet Emissions keyword: Earth Science > Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Solar X-Ray Emissions type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: NASA/Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Earth Science Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2007-04 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) revision edition: Version 6.0.0.0.0 editionDate: 2007-04 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA/GSFC/SED/ESD/GCDC/GCMD > Global Change Master Directory, Global Change Data Center, Earth Sciences Division, Science and Exploration Directorate, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov/Resources/valids/archives/keyword_list.html protocol: http applicationProfile: web browser name: GCMD Keywords, Version 6.0.0.0.0 description: Thesuarus for earth science keywords and associated directories hosted and maintained by NASA. function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) information role: (CI_RoleCode) resourceProvider descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Solar Physics type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Uncontrolled Keywords date: descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: WDC/STP, BOULDER > World Data Center for Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Boulder keyword: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) dataCenter thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: NASA/GCMD Data Center Keywords date: descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Global type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) place thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: NASA/GCMD Location Keywords date: resourceConstraints: (MD_LegalConstraints) accessConstraints: (MD_RestrictionCode) otherRestrictions useConstraints: (MD_RestrictionCode) otherRestrictions otherConstraints: Access Constraints: No Constraints Use Constraints: None Distribution Liability: While every effort has been made to ensure that these data are accurate and reliable within the limits of the current state of the art, NOAA cannot assume liability for any damages caused by any errors or omissions in the data, nor as a result of the failure of the data to function on a particular system.
