Solar Imagery - Photographs and Drawings |
Collection includes a variety of solar photographic and illustrated datasets
contributed by a number of national and private solar observatories located worldwide.
Daily solar observations range from the mid 1800's to the present. White-light photographs
of the solar disk and limb reveal features on and near the photospheric disk including
active regions and sunspots. Solar observations viewed at specific wavelengths, including
hydrogen-alpha (656.3 nm), calcium-K (393.3 nm), iron and radio frequencies, reveal
the structure and dynamics of chromospheric features, including plague, filaments
and prominences, and the extended corona. Composite full-sun drawings, prepared by
professional staff at various observatories, provide a daily synoptic perspective
of solar features that can be tracked from day to day.

National Solar Observatory |
The mission of the National Solar Observatory is to advance knowledge of the Sun,
both as an astronomical object and as the dominant external influence on Earth, by
providing forefront observational opportunities to the research community. The mission
includes the operation of cutting edge facilities, the continued development of advanced
instrumentation both in-house and through partnerships, conducting solar research,
and educational and public outreach. NSO accomplishes this mission by; 1) Providing
leadership for the development of new ground-based facilities that support the scientific
objectives of the solar and solar-terrestrial physics community; 2) Advancing solar
instrumentation in collaboration with university researchers, industry, and other
government laboratories; 3) Providing background synoptic observations that permit
solar investigations from the ground and space to be placed in the context of the
variable Sun; 4) Providing research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate
students, helping develop classroom activities, working with teachers, and mentoring
high school students; 5) Innovative staff research.

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) |
The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is part of the National Weather Service
and is one of the nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction. It is the nation's
official source of space weather alerts, watches and warnings. SWPC provides real-time
monitoring and forecasting of solar and geophysical events which impact satellites,
power grids, communications, navigation, and many other technological systems. SWPC
also explores and evaluates new models and products and transitions them into operations.
SWPC is also the primary warning center for the International Space Environment Service
and works with many national and international partners with whom data, products,
and services are shared.

Wendelstein Observatory |
The Wendelstein Observatory is situated on the summit of Mount Wendelstein, a prominent,
1838 m high mountain in the bavarian Alpes. It is operated by the University Observatory
of the University of Munich. The observatory was first installed to survey the solar
activity. In the mid-1980, it was redirected to night observations of stars and galaxies,
but it still owns a 20-cm Zeiss solar coronograph. Nowadays, the coronograph is used
only for eduction and public outreach.
