            presentationForm:
abstract:  Collection includes a variety of H-alpha photographic datasets contributed by a number of national and private solar observatories located worldwide. Solar observations in hydrogen-alpha (656.3 nm) reveal the structure and dynamics of chromospheric features including prominences, filaments, plague, filaments and the chromospheric network.
purpose:  The NGDC Solar and Terrestrial Physics (STP) division provides scientific data stewardship of solar-terrestrial datasets in compliance with NOAA Administrative Order (NAO) 212-12, "Management of Environmental and Geospatial Data and Information", dated 04 Nov 10. Scientific Data Stewardship includes the Archive, Access, and Assessment (AAA) of operational and related solar and space environmental datasets.
credit:  Data access provided by the NOAA Solar and Terrestrial Physics Division. Numerous solar observatories have contributed to this collection - please refer to the Lineage section of this metadata record.

                                name:  National Solar Observatory
description:  The mission of the National Solar Observatory is to advance knowledge of the Sun, both as an astronomical object and as the dominant external influence on Earth, by providing forefront observational opportunities to the research community. The mission includes the operation of cutting edge facilities, the continued development of advanced instrumentation both in-house and through partnerships, conducting solar research, and educational and public outreach. NSO accomplishes this mission by; 1) Providing leadership for the development of new ground-based facilities that support the scientific objectives of the solar and solar-terrestrial physics community; 2) Advancing solar instrumentation in collaboration with university researchers, industry, and other government laboratories; 3) Providing background synoptic observations that permit solar investigations from the ground and space to be placed in the context of the variable Sun; 4) Providing research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, helping develop classroom activities, working with teachers, and mentoring high school students; 5) Innovative staff research.

description:  The STP Division is responsible for the archive and access of solar and space environmental data and derived products collected by NOAA observing systems and acquired through the World Data Center for Solar and Terrestrial Physics (Boulder). Archives include extensive collections of data from solar observatories, ground ionospheric sounders, and satellites plus modeled space climatologies. The World Data Centers are being incorporated into the new ICSU World Data System (WDS).
