ISOON is a semi-autonomous, remotely commandable patrol telescope designed for studies of solar activity in support of space weather specifications and forecasts. ISOON can receive and analyze solar images and other data at a remote location -- in essence, forming a desktop solar observatory. ISOON acquires solar images in the hydrogen-alpha line (once per minute), in continuum (once every ten minutes), and in line-of-sight magnetic fields. The current dataset is limited to daily solar images in the 630.315 continuum. purpose: The NGDC Solar and Terrestrial Physics (STP) division provides scientific data stewardship of solar-terrestrial datasets in compliance with NOAA Administrative Order (NAO) 212-12, "Management of Environmental and Geospatial Data and Information", dated 04 Nov 10. Scientific Data Stewardship includes the Archive, Access, and Assessment (AAA) of operational and related solar and space environmental datasets. credit: Data access provided by the NOAA Solar and Terrestrial Physics Division. status: (MD_ProgressCode) underDevelopment pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: William Denig organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC > National Geophysical Data Center, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: (303) 497-6323 facsimile: (303) 497-6513 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC E/GC2 325, Broadway city: Boulder administrativeArea: Colorado postalCode: 80305-3337 country: U.S.A. electronicMailAddress: solar.ngdc@noaa.gov hoursOfService: 9:00 - 5:00 Mountain role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) annually graphicOverview: (MD_BrowseGraphic) fileName: ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/STP/space-weather/solar-data/solar-images/whilte-light/isoon/documentation/browse-isoon.jpg fileDescription: Browse ISOON image of the sun within the 630.315 continuum provided by the National Solar Observatory fileType: Joint Photographic Experts Group (jpg) format descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Solar Active Regions keyword: Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Solar Imagery keyword: Sun-Earth Interactions > Solar Activity > Sunspots type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: NASA/GCMD Earth Science Keywords; Olsen, L.M., G. Both SOON and ISOON provide data that support a wide variety of users of space weather specifications and forecasts. The original SOON, in operation since the mid-1970s, was slated for an upgrade in its capabilities to observe solar activity. Hence ISOON was conceived in 1996, and was designed with the added feature of having each of its telescopes remotely operated from a single command and analysis center. The objectives of ISOON are to improve solar monitoring capabilities and to reduce operating costs via less required maintenance (design simplication compared to SOON) and the ability to analyze data from all ISOON sites at one central location. The design and construction of ISOON took place at the National Solar Observatory / Sacramento Peak, as a joint project of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the National Solar Observatory. The prototype instrument was completed and demonstrated in 2002. Non-contiguous daily solar images are currently available from 2003 to 2012. As of July 2012 the ISOON instrument is being re-located to Kirtland AFB where it will continue to be operated by AFRL for research and limited operational support. processStep: (LI_ProcessStep) description: Automated daily image analysis perfomed by computer.
