        abstract:  The U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) is a network of climate stations now being developed as part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) initiative.
        purpose:  Its primary goal is to provide future long-term homogeneous observations of temperature and precipitation that can be coupled to long-term historical observations for the detection and attribution of present and future climate change. Data from the USCRN will be used in operational climate monitoring activities and for placing current climate anomalies into an historical perspective. The USCRN will also provide the United States with a reference network that meets the requirements of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).

        supplementalInformation:  The USCRN Program is the first "climate-driven" observing network designed for the specific purpose of acquiring near-real-time climate-quality observations designed to address the climate community's requirements regarding long-term (50-100 years) surface air temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and soil moisture and temperature observations free of biases in order to give a national climate profile. Other supporting obs include @1.5M height: wind speed, incoming solar radiation and ground IR sfc temp. The complete network of 114 sites has been installed and operating in the Continental US and two in Hawaii since the end of 2008. During FY 10-16, a total of 29 new stations will be installed in Alaska. Beginning FY 09, soil moisture and temperature, and relative humidity sensors are being installed at all 114 sites across the lower 48. Network design, operation, and life-cycle maintenance adhere to the guidelines and principles for long-term climate monitoring: Int'l endorsed Ten Climate Monitoring Principles (NRC 1999 Report, Adequacy of Climate Observing Systems), and WMO Guidelines and Principles specified in WMO-GCOS 2nd Report on Adequacy of Observing Systems (Geneva, 2003).
