        supplementalInformation:  Moored buoy systems consist of a floating hull attached to an anchor by a mooring line to keep the hull within a watch circle area on the water surface. The size of the watch circle usually is larger for buoys in deeper water. A mast(s) on the deck of the buoy supports communications antennas, solar power panels, and sensors that must be exposed (e.g., anemometer) to the environment. Sensors that do not require direct exposure (e.g., wave motion sensors) are positioned inside the hull. Buoy hulls are discus shaped and boat shaped. Discuss hulls are 3 meters (m), 10 m, and 12 m in diameter; boat shaped hulls are 6 m long and 2.5 m wide. Approximately 75 buoys are deployed in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Bering Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes. Approximately 80% are in the coastal zone or Great Lakes; the remainder are in the open ocean. All buoys measure wind direction, speed, and peak 5-sec gust; barometric pressure; air and sea surface temperatures; and provide estimates of significant wave height and wave period based on wave energy detected by sensors located inside the hull. Many buoys also measure relative humidity and wave direction. Meteorological observations are sampled and averaged over 8 minutes to remove the effects of the moving platform, and sea state samples are averaged over 20 minutes to obtain representative samples. Observations are reported every hour via the NOAA NESDIS Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) system; some buoys measure and report every half hour.
