        abstract:  The use of fossil fuels and practice of deforestation to meet the world's energy demands has lead to increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. Both gases absorb terrestrial infrared radiation and have the potential to affect earth's climate. Before policies can be developed to limit the emissions of these gases into the atmosphere, their biogeochemical cycling must be understood. The NOAA CMDL Carbon Cycle Greenhouse Gases group makes ongoing discrete measurements from land and sea surface sites and aircraft, and continuous measurements from baseline observatories and tall towers. These measurements document the spatial and temporal distributions of carbon-cycle gases and provide essential constraints to our understanding of the global carbon cycle.
        purpose:  The atmospheric observing system is used to measure spatial and temporal patterns of important long-lived greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and supporting measurements, such as isotopic ratios of carbon dioxide. This creates a historical record of atmospheric changes. The spatial patterns are then used to infer, over large spatial scales, time-dependent sources and sinks of the greenhouse gases at the earth's surface. Part of mission goal 2 of the NOAA Strategic Plan: Understand climate variability and change to enhance society's ability to plan and respond. Specifically, we need to quantify and understand the dynamics of the global carbon cycle, and in particular the U.S. terrestrial carbon sink.

        supplementalInformation:  The system consists of weekly discrete air samples at about 50 locations worldwide in environments where local contamination from strong sources/sinks of greenhouse gases in the nearest hundreds of km can be avoided. This is possible in many coastal locations, deserts, and high mountains. All samples are chemically analyzed in a single location under very strict conditions of quality control and calibration. Additional discrete air samples are obtained regularly on very tall transmitter towers, on light aircraft, and on several commercial container ships. Continuous measurements are made at the four CMDL background observatories, and on three tall transmitter towers. Duplication of certain measurements is an essential element of the very strict quality control procedures being applied. Currently (2003) the network is undergoing a significant expansion in North America. The required accuracy of all measurements is very high, for example for carbon dioxide it is one part in 4000, for methane one part in 2000, for the 13C/12C isotopic ratio of carbon dioxide one part in 100,000. (1) System is planned to be maintained (and upgraded when necessary) for long-term climate change research.
