Data themselves consist of moderate resolution coastlines, national boundaries, rivers, lakes, etc. None of these files should be considered definitive, each is provided for reference where the user may lack more detailed or more current files.

The documentation itself is contained in the \DOCUMENT\VECTOR directory, as scanned .gif images from the Global Ecosystems Database, distributed by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center. Hardcopy documentation for these data, as well as for data in the \DATA\NCILLARY directory on Disc 2 of this set, is available at nominal charge from NGDC.
