MAGNETIC ANOMALY DATA IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION Stewart D. Racey Susan J. Mclean W. Minor Davis Ronald W. Buhmann Allen M. (FSU). These sheets were digitized in 1982 by the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), Stennis Space Center Mississippi in order to produce four (4) regional one-arc-minute grids of magnetic anomaly values covering the entire FSU. The digital data were provided to the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) for archival and public dissemination. The data set contains a wealth of information useful to Earth scientists studying global tectonic processes and the deep crustal composition of major continental cratons. This CD contains the digital magnetic anomaly data for the FSU along with revised versions of the data. The digital data were contributed by the US Naval Oceanographic Office at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi; Conoco, Inc., Ponca City, Oklahoma and the National Geophysical Data Center, Boulder, Colorado. When it exists, information is provided for each data set about the contributor, the quality of the data, problems that may be encountered in using these data in some applications, and other additional information. DIRECTORY STRUCTURE The root level directories for the CD are DATA, DOCUMENT, and SOFTWARE. Please see the file FSU_DIR.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory for a complete description of the directories. GETTING STARTED The GeoVu software is provided on the CD to access and display the data files. GeoVu will operate on PCs running Microsoft Windows, and on Macintosh, UNIX Sun, and UNIX Silicon Graphics computers. Graphics capability and a CD-ROM reader are required. Not all of the data provided on this CD are displayable through GeoVu. The GeoVu installation files for these platforms are provided on the CD-ROM in subdirectories under the SOFTWARE\GEOVU directory. Instructions for installing and running GeoVu on the different platforms are found in platform specific README files in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\DOC_FILE directory. Additional Documentation for GeoVu can also be found in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\DOC_FILE directory. Brief instructions for downloading future upgrades of GeoVu from NGDC's ftp site and installing the software are in "gvquick". The GeoVu User's Manual is in "gvhelp". Several versions of each file are available; Microsoft Word (*.doc) for PCs; MS Word for Macintosh (*.mcw); postscript files you can print (*.ps) or (*.eps); and as text files "*.txt". The current version of GeoVu does not support horizontal scrolling of documentation; therefore, on some machines, documentation may be truncated on the right side. To view the entire documentation file, you can print the *.txt files in the DOCUMENT directory. FREEFORM The NGDC FREEFORM utilities for converting data to different formats, are also included on the CD. Please see the appropriate platform README file in the SOFTWARE\FREEFORM directory. UPDATES TO THE CD If you know of Russian magnetic anomaly data, or other aeromagnetic data sets not included here which could be made available for a future CD, please contact one of the authors. Updates to the search software for the CD are available on the Internet at the following anonymous ftp site: ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov, in the directory: Solid_Earth/Access_Tools/GeoVu TRADEMARK ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In this documentation, trademarked commercial products and companies may be named. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors would like to acknowledge the work done by many dedicated people in gathering, compiling, testing and assembling the data which make up this CD-ROM. Where it is known, the researchers, organizations, and others responsible for the data files are documented. We apologize for any errors or oversights in this process and request that if you find errors in this regard or in any other aspect of this compilation, please contact one of the authors at the above address. The authors would also like to thank the staff at the National Geophysical Data Center. Of special note are thanks to Lionel Loza for scanning and digitizing the documentation files and to Ted Habermann and his crew of hardworking GeoVu and Freeform computer programmers; especially Mark Ohrenschall, Patrick Hayes, and Deborah Sinay. Thanks also to David Schoolcraft for work on IDRISI image files.
