Gravity core (big) 2400 lb. weightstand, 1 section. Subsamples: core cutter, scrape of external pipe for microfauna. Site info: L977AR Ln725. Pull out: 610. Piercement structure/mound. Poorly sorted subangular silt with dominant background clay that resembles glacial flour. Some silt-sized brown angular fragments (may be organic). Rare, poorly preserved sponge spicules. Barren of diatoms.

Comments: Core section 1, identified as HLY1002-1GB-1-001
Description: preliminary description: Silty clay. Iron sulfides present throughout section, with greater amounts in upper 8 cm. Deeper (greater than 8 cm) occurs primarily as bands. Also in this section, limited bands of brown sands with associated fine-grained organic matter. Massive authigenic carbonates throughout the core. Authigenic carbonate nodules vary in size from 0.5 cm up to 4 cm. A full authigenic carbonate record at 2-3 cm vertical resolution is possible. Smaller disseminated carbonate also present, not visible, but identifiable as angular grains. Gas (methane) generated fractures throughout. Four complete valves.
