Dredge Site #4 The western slope of the Healy Seamount of the NWR, the uppermost part of it; slopes up to 60-65 degrees. Submarine fault block. Healy Seamount. Western side of Healy Seamount. Descriptions below are preliminary visual shipboard observations.

Description: Fine-grained white-gayish sand, not even sandstone (wet, obviously), fragile, surface exposed to sea water is covered with a thin blak manganese film

Comments: Sample or specimen identified as: HLY0905 DS4-002, 20x13x9 cm rocksample is broken in a few pieces. One goes to he UM (002B).
Description: Glass rind from the surface of likely pillow basalt. There is no ochre clay visible, so, probably, the sample is relatively fresh. However, the lower part of the rind shows something that maybe palagonization, but it is difficult to say. The upper part exposed to water is covered with a black caverned manganse crust 2-3 cm thick

Comments: Sample or specimen identified as: HLY0905 DS4-003, 50x40x30 cm rocksample broke apart when fall on the deck. Two small pieces (003B and 003B-1) go to UM, two (003C and 003D) to Stanford.
Description: Masive fine-gained basalt with visibl leiths of Pl and rare phenocrysts of Pl, Ol(?) and Cpx(?) in the groundmass. In spite of its rounded shape (pillow-like) basalt does not display any traces of glass rind resulted from the underwater eruption. The shape could, therefore, be resulted from the erosion. Secondary alteration is pronouned in yelowish clay developed along the cracks of clivage(?). The surface is covered with thin black Mn film, the top part of the sample - with thick (up to 3-4 cm) caverned and corroded (?) manganese crust.

Description: Similar to 003 masive fine-gained basalt with visible leiths of Pl and rare phenocrysts of Pl, Ol(?) and Cpx(?) in the groundmass. The shape is irregular. Secondary alteration is not pronounced visibly. The surface is covered with thin black Mn film, the top part of the sample - with thick (up to 1-2 cm) caverned (corroded?) manganese crust.

Description: Very beginning of he development of the manganese crust on the surface of basalt. Basalt is already altered, started to be cavernous, it is seen how small manganese (or maybe even hematite) concretions/nodules started to develop. Further toward the contact with sea water crust is real, thick 1-2 cm) and cavernous (as it is typical for all Mn crusts met in the region)

Description: Black Mn crust scrapped from basalt (v). Bigger fragments seem to keep a general shape of the basaltic rock curvature
