Southeast Indian Ridge; Sampling locale: Seamount south of ridge axis, segment J4, on ~ 1 my old seafloor.
1 :
Weathering/Metamorphism: weathering - heavy
Comments: Sample Type: Aphyric basalt. Mineralogy: Aphyric. Weathering: Heavy Mn crust. Glass condition: >50% fresh glass and Mn/Fe oxide coatings. 2 buckets.DG has a subsample of 40-1,-2,-3 and also several unumbered type 1 pieces. KJ has glass from 40-1,2,3,4,5. Probe glass taken from all samples.Rounded pieces of an aphyric lava flow that is heavily Mn-encrusted. Samples 40-1 and 40-2 may be entirely glass. The other three samples also have a large amount of fresh glass. This is type 1 of this dredge.
2 :
Weathering/Metamorphism: weathering - heavy
Comments: Sample Type: Aphyric basalt. Mineralogy: Aphyric with rare Plagioclase. Weathering: Heavy Mn crust and rim of altered whole rock. Glass condition: No glass. 2 buckets.KN has whole rock subsample of 40-6.Angular cobble of an aphyric lava that has Mn-encrusted rim ~ 3mm thick. Rim of altered whole rock is ~ 8mm thick. Two plagioclase clots present. Type 2 of this dredge.
