W Pacific Ocean, Manus Basin. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt; pumice

Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: 50 kg of lava. Four types: 1) Most abundant, aphyric pillow fragments with varying amounts of glass on one rounded surface; three wrapped, remainder unwrapped in two pails; oldest rocks dredged so far (J. Sinton). 2) Two smaller fragments, completely glassy, both wrapped. 3) Large peice of a flow with ropey surface and large internal channels; 1 large piece in bag and 3 small ones in a bucket. 4) Two fragments, some vesicles, no glass; bagged. 2 small pumice pieces. 3 pails + 1 bag.
