W Pacific Ocean, Manus Basin. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt
1 :
Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: ~5 kg of older-looking lavas plus 3 pieces of pumice. 1) Weathered pillow fragments (5 pieces) *- 3 pieces have a kind of coating or layer that was attached to the glassy surface; thin dense layer ~0.2 cm in the middle of 2 crumbly black surfaces; bottom of this layer has drip structures (Therefore, must have a gap between glass & this layer). It think it maybe a manganese layer. Very weathered-looking. Phenocrysts of plagioclase, maybe clinopyroxene & maybe olivine ?. 2) Fresh horn pillow - plagioclase & olivine phenocrysts
