EARTHQUAKE STRONG MOTION 3-VOLUME CD-ROM COLLECTION March 1996 National Geophysical Data Center 325 Broadway, E/GC1 Boulder, Colorado 80303 USA Ph. 1-303-497-6084 Fax 1-303-497-6513 Internet pkd@ngdc.noaa.gov info@ngdc.noaa.gov The Earthquake Strong Motion CD-ROM Collection contains a collection of over 15,000 digitized and processed accelerograph records dating from 1933 to 1994. Three types of processed records are included on the CDs: Uncorrected (raw), Corrected (filtered), and Response spectra (includes Fourier spectra). All of the records on this CD-ROM are public domain and can be used or redistributed without restriction. The data on the CDs are organized as follows: Volume 1 California records for 1933-1988 Montana, Nevada, and Washington records (A complete listing is found in VL1INDEX.TXT) Volume 2 California records for 1989-1994 and all other non-California USA records (A complete listing is found in VL2INDEX.TXT) Volume 3 Non-USA records (A complete listing is found in VL3INDEX.TXT) The root level directories for each CD are DATA, DOCUMENT and SOFTWARE. These directories are described in more detail below. DATA - Contains directories of all the data sets on the CD-ROM, for example USACA01, USACA02, etc. DATA SET directories (for example USACA01) - Contains a *.txt file that provides information on the triggering event, contributing organization, and type of data; and a *.bib file with a bibliography. RECORDS directories - Contains the ASCII files of the accelerograph records. The files can be retrieved with the SMCAT3 software. DOCUMENT - Contains PCX files of the documentation that can be displayed with the GeoVu software. SOFTWARE - Contains directories of the GeoVu and SMCAT3 software. SMCAT3 - Contains SMCAT3 (Strong Motion Data Catalog) installation software and help files. GEOVU - Contains GeoVu installation software and help files. GETTING STARTED SMCAT3 (Strong Motion Data Catalog) SMCAT3 is a data inventory package for IBM PCs. It contains a comprehensive database which summarizes the characteristics of each accelerogram. SMCAT3 allows users to search the database for records suitable for specific applications, display the results of the search, output the results to an ASCII, DBASE, or LOTUS file, and retrieve the files from the CDs. The SMCAT3 installation file for IBM PCs is provided on the Earthquake Strong Motion CDs in the SOFTWARE\SMCAT3 directory. Installation instructions are in the "README.CAT" file in the same SOFTWARE\SMCAT3 directory. SMCAT3 USER MANUAL Print the SMCAT3.PS postscript file located in the SOFTWARE\SMCAT3 directory for detailed information on the software. GEOVU DISPLAY AND ACCESS SOFTWARE The GeoVu software is provided on the CDs to display PCX files of documentation related to the accelerograph data. GeoVu will operate on any IBM PC-compatible personal computer running Microsoft Windows with a graphics board and a CD-ROM reader. The GeoVu installation files for Microsoft Windows are provided on the Earthquake Strong Motion CD-ROMs in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\PC directory. Installation instructions are in the "README.GEO" file in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU directory. ABOUT THE COMPACT DISC The data on this CD-ROM are written in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9660 format. Mastering of the CD-ROM disc and replication of the copies were done by Disc Manufacturing, Inc., Anaheim, California, under contract to NGDC. Handle the CD-ROM carefully to avoid damage. Dust, scratches, ink, paint, fingerprints, and high temperatures may corrupt this media. With careful handling and proper storage the discs have an expected lifetime of ten years.
