EARTHQUAKE SEISMICITY CATALOG VOLUMES 1 & 2 Lowell S. Whiteside David T. Dater Paula K. Dunbar Stewart D. Racey Ronald W. Buhmann Allen M. Hittelman National Geophysical Data Center World Data Center-A Solid Earth Geophysics 325 Broadway, E/GC1 Boulder, Colorado 80303 USA Phone: (303) 497-6477 (Lowell Whiteside) FAX: (303) 497-6513 Internet e-mail: info@ngdc.noaa.gov http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov The Earthquake Seismicity Catalog CDs contain earthquake data from all over the globe. These data were obtained from many national and international organizations; from manuscripts, printed works, and papers published in journals; and by electronic file transfer. Where it exists, information is provided for each data set about the contributor, the quality of the data, problems that may be encountered in using these data in some applications, and additional information where available. VOLUME 1 Volume 1 contains seismicity data for Central America, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and the United States. Volume 1 also includes supplementary data including fault parameter data and focal mechanisms, earthquake intensity data, moment tensor data, tsunami data, travel time data, volcano data, and world stress data. VOLUME 2 Volume 2 contains regional earthquake data for Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, and Oceanic areas. Volume 2 also contains global catalogs from several sources and catalogs from the U.S. Geological Survey. Original data sets are included where possible. The majority of the data on the CDs are accessible with the GeoVu display and access software. Installation and documentation files for the software are found under the directory SOFTWARE\GEOVU. Please see the section below, "GETTING STARTED". DIRECTORY STRUCTURE The root level directories for each CD are DATA, DOCUMENT, and SOFTWARE. Please see the files VOL1_DIR.TXT and VOL2_DIR.TXT for a complete description of the directories. Full and complete bibliographies for both CDs (Volumes 1 and 2) are in the directory DATA\SUPPLMNT\BIBLIOG on Volume 1. GETTING STARTED The GeoVu software is provided on the CDs to access and display the data files. GeoVu will operate on any PC running Microsoft Windows, and on Macintosh, UNIX Sun, and UNIX Silicon Graphics computers. Graphics capability and a CD-ROM reader are required. The GeoVu installation files for these platforms are provided on the Earthquake Seismicity Catalog CD-ROMs in subdirectories under the SOFTWARE\GEOVU directory. Instructions for installing and running GeoVu on the different platforms are found in the files README.GEO and EXERCISES.TXT in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\ directory. Additional Documentation for GeoVu can be found in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\DOC_FILE directory. Brief instructions for downloading new versions of GeoVu from the ftp site and installing the software running GeoVu are in "gvquick". The GeoVu User's Manual is in "gvhelp". Several versions of each file are available. "*.doc" is Microsoft Word 6.0 for PCs; "*.mcw" is MS Word for Macintosh; "*.ps" or "*.eps" are postscript files you can print; "*.pdf" is Acrobat reader format; and "*.txt" is a Unix text file. The current version of GeoVu does not support horizontal scrolling of documentation; therefore, on some machines, documentation will be truncated on the right side. To view the entire documentation file for each data set, you can print the *.txt file in each data set's directory. FREEFORM The NGDC FREEFORM utilities for converting data to different formats, such as the USGS format, are also included on the CDs. Please see the README.FRE file in the SOFTWARE\FREEFORM directory and the manuals in the SOFTWARE\FREEFORM\DOC_FILE directory. UPDATES TO THE CDS If you know of seismicity catalogs not included here which could be made available for a future CD, please contact one of the authors. Periodic updates to the Global and North American CDs will be available on the Internet at the following anonymous ftp site: ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov The data will be in the directory: Solid_Earth/Natural_Hazards/Seismicity/EQCD_Updates Search software for the CDs will be available in the near future at the same ftp site and directory. New releases of the GeoVu software are also available on the Internet at the same ftp site, ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov, in the directory: Solid_Earth/Access_Tools/GeoVu TRADEMARK ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In this documentation, trademarked commercial products and companies may be named. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors gratefully acknowledge work by Glen Reagor, Jim Dewey, and others at the U.S. Geological Survey, who contributed data and assisted with preparation and review of these CD-ROMs. In acknowledgment, we have included the USGS logo on the CDs. The authors also acknowledge the work done by thousands of dedicated geologists, geophysicists, and graduate students in gathering, compiling, testing and assembling the data which make up the catalogs located on this CD-ROM. Where it is known, the researchers, organizations, graduate students, professors, and others responsible for the individual catalogs are cited with the catalog documents. We apologize for any errors or oversights in this process and request that if you find errors in this regard or in any other aspect of this compilation, please contact one of the authors at the above address. The authors would also like to thank the staff at the National Geophysical Data Center. Of special note are thanks to Carol Gerlitz for final editing of the manuscript and to Ted Habermann and his crew of hardworking GeoVu and Freeform computer programmers; especially Mark Ohrenschall, Patrick Hayes, and Deborah Sinay. Thanks also to Lionel Loza for work on image files, to Sue McLean for effective oversight of the project, to Jim Lander and Patricia Lockridge for updates to the tsunami data base, and to Minor Davis for work on related software.
