INSTALLING, STARTING, and RUNNING the GeoVu Access Software GeoVu is a data independent/platform independent browse and visualization application currently operating in the Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and Sun and SGI MOTIF environments. Please follow the instructions below for INSTALLING and STARTING GeoVu for the particular platform you are using. The instructions for RUNNING GeoVu are the same for all platforms with a few noted exceptions. Brief instructions for running GeoVu are described at the end of this file and more detailed instructions are in the file EXERCISE.TXT also in this directory. NOTE: The SOFTWARE directories are identical on the two CDs, therefore, you can install GeoVu from either Volume 1 or Volume 2. INSTALLING GEOVU ON A PC The GeoVu installation files for Microsoft Windows are provided on the CD-ROMs in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\PC\PCINSTAL directory. Three megabytes of hard disk space are required to load and execute the software. We recommend using a computer with at least 640 kilobytes of RAM and a 20 megabyte hard disk (minimum). A math coprocessor will significantly speed up the application. If the DOS file and buffer limits are set too low, the access software will not run or will lock-up. We suggest setting both to a minimum of ten. 1. Insert the CD into the drive (and make sure the reader is turned on). 2. With Windows running, use the Program Manager File menu to select Run. If L: is the drive used, in response to the Run dialog type L:\SOFTWARE\GEOVU\PC\PCINSTAL\SETUP 3. Follow the installation instructions on the screen. The contents of the GeoVu software and accessory files will be copied to your hard drive in the directory of your choice. 4. After installing GeoVu, copy the files in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\PC\GV_MISC directory on the CD-ROM to the GEOVU directory on your PC. (The CDM_SERV.LST file will overwrite the file copied to the GeoVu directory during the installation of GeoVu.) 5. The file CDM_SERV.LST is designed to be customized for your individual needs and instructions are found within this file. As an example, you can set the CD-ROM drive letter while GeoVu is running. However, to have it appear as a default you need to specify the letter in the file CDM_SERV.LST. Edit the distribution copy of CDM_SERV.LST so that it operates in a manner suitable to your configuration. STARTING GEOVU ON A PC 1. To start GeoVu as a Windows desktop application, double-click on the GeoVu icon. 2. See the instructions below and in the file EXERCISE.TXT for information on RUNNING GeoVu. INSTALLING GEOVU ON A MACINTOSH The GeoVu installation files for Macintosh machines are provided on the North American and Global CD-ROMs in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\MAC directory. 1. Insert the CD into the drive (and make sure the reader is turned on). 2. Copy the file geovu_se.hqx from the CD-ROM directory SOFTWARE\GEOVU\MAC to your hard drive. 3. Decode this file with StuffIt Expander or BinHex. These are free software utilities available in many places including: http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html. 4. Double-click the geovu.sea icon to install the geovu folder anywhere you like on your hard drive. (This may have happened automatically, depending on your StuffIt settings.) 5. After installing GeoVu, copy the files in the SOFTWARE\GEOVU\MC\GV_MISC folder on the CD-ROM to the GEOVU folder on your Macintosh. STARTING GEOVU ON A MACINTOSH 1. To start GeoVu for Macintosh, double-click on the GeoVu icon. 2. See the instructions below and in the file EXERCISE.TXT for information on RUNNING GeoVu. INSTALLING GEOVU ON A UNIX SUN The GeoVu installation files for UNIX SUN machines are provided on the CD-ROMs in the software/geovu/unix_sun directory. 1. Insert the CD into the drive (and make sure the reader is turned on). 2. Copy the file geovu_ta.z from the CD-ROM directory software/geovu/unix_sun to your hard drive. The file geovu_ta.z is a compressed tar file containing the GeoVu executable and associated files. Copy this file to the directory where you wish to install GeoVu (typically your home directory). 3. Because the CD-ROM was made on a DOS-based computer you will need to rename the file to uncompress it. Type the following commands: mv geovu_ta.z geovu_ta.Z uncompress geovu.ta.Z tar xvf geovu.ta This generates a /geovu directory and copies the file g2 to your home directory (assuming you installed GeoVu in your home directory). This g2 file is a simple ASCII file and is the X applications defaults file for GeoVu. If you did not install GeoVu in your home directory, you must move the g2 X applications defaults file to your home directory. 4. The environment variable GEOVUDIR needs to point to your geovu directory. For example, if you use the C Shell, put the following line in your .cshrc file: setenv GEOVUDIR ~/geovu This assumes you un-tar'd geovu.tar in your home directory - though this is not necessary. 5. The GeoVu executable is in the /geovu directory called g2. 6. After installing GeoVu, copy the files from the software/geovu/unix_sun directory on the CD-ROM to the /geovu directory on your machine. (The cdmenu.lst file will overwrite the file copied to the GeoVu directory during the installation of GeoVu.) STARTING GEOVU ON A UNIX SUN 1. To start GeoVu for Motif, as a desktop application, click on the GeoVu icon. To start GeoVu on a UNIX machine from your /geovu directory type g2 2. See the instructions below and in the file EXERCISE.TXT for information on RUNNING GeoVu. INSTALLING GEOVU ON A UNIX SGI The GeoVu installation files for UNIX SGI machines are provided on the CD-ROMs in the software/geovu/unix_sgi directory. 1. Insert the CD into the drive (and make sure the reader is turned on). 2. Copy the file geovu_ta.z from the CD-ROM directory software/geovu/unix_sgi to your hard drive. 5. The GeoVu executable is in the /geovu directory called g2. 6. After installing GeoVu, copy the files from the software/geovu/unix_sgi directory on the CD-ROM to the /geovu directory on your machine. (The cdmenu.lst file will overwrite the file copied to the GeoVu directory during the installation of GeoVu.) STARTING GEOVU ON A UNIX SGI 1. To start GeoVu for Motif, as a desktop application, click on the GeoVu icon. To start GeoVu on a UNIX machine from your /geovu directory type g2 2. See the instructions below and in the file EXERCISE.TXT for information on RUNNING GeoVu. RUNNING GEOVU Pull-down menus appear at the top of the application window, titled GeoVu, and each displays a family of commands when you click on it. The GeoVu menus are File, Edit, Search, GeoReference, Utilities, Windows and Help. GEOVU STATUS WINDOW GeoVu first appears with a STATUS window. The lists will help you keep track of your open data and search definitions. The Windows menu shows a list of all top-level display windows and allows the current (front) window to be selected from this list. After opening GeoVu, enlarge the display window by clicking on the UP arrow located in the upper right corner of the GeoVu display screen. NOTE: The display windows on the MACINTOSH and UNIX machines disappear behind the STATUS window. To bring a display to the front, select the GeoVu Windows menu and select the desired plot. GEOVU FILE EXTENSIONS GeoVu has standard file extensions used when writing and reading files: .dat ASCII data files .bin binary data files .fmt format description files .hdr header files documenting grids .doc documentation files .lst data field histogram information .cst character version of the .lst files Note: If you export data to a binary file, it must have .bin extension to be viewed by GeoVu.
