The following organization provides Worldwide Earthquake data.

National Earthquake Information Center

    US Geological Survey
    National Earthquake Information Center
    P.O. Box 25046
    Denver Federal Center, MS 967
    Denver, CO 80225
    Telephone: (303) 273-8500
    Fax: (303) 273-8450
    Email: NEIC@usgs.gov
    Website: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/

The National Earthquake Information Center, NEIC,

  • Operates a 24-hour-a-day Earthquake Early Alerting Service, which rapidly and accurately determines the location and magnitude of significant earthquakes throughout the world
  • Computes earthquake source parameters, such as location, magnitude and moment sensors
  • Rapidly relays significant earthquake information to key civil defense and public safety agencies, including railroads, power pants, and pipeline companies; Federal and State emergency service agencies; national and international news media; scientific agencies; and to private citizens who request information
  • Conducts earthquake research
  • Operates the National Seismograph Network and various global networks

The following data may be accessed from the NEIC website:

  • Near-real-time worldwide earthquake locations and maps
  • Current hypocenter and phase data; Quick Epicenter Determinations (QED)
  • A historical earthquake database covering earthquakes worldwide from 1973 through the current QED and includes events with known magnitude values that range from 0.1 to 9.9. Users search the data base with the necessary parameters such as date, magnitude, depth range, or geographic area to obtain the desired list.
  • Significant Earthquakes of the World, an annual report (1980-present) providing data and descriptions of earthquakes with a magnitude 6.5 or greater or that had caused fatalities, injuries, or substantial damage. The current year's significant earthquakes are updated monthly.

Digital seismograph data are available on CD-ROM for various stations and networks from 1977 to the present.

The weekly and monthly Preliminary Determination of Epicenters are available via anonymous FTP to gldfs.cr.usgs.gov.

Earthquake releases and the final QED bulletin are also available by electronic mail subscription to majordomo@ghtmail.cr.usgs.gov

You may call the 24-hour Earthquake Information Line, (303) 273-8516, for information on earthquakes recorded during the previous 48 hours. Information on felt earthquakes throughout the world of magnitude 5.5 or greater and on many felt earthquakes within the United States is included on the recording. The recorded message is updated twice daily by the NEIC and whenever the NEIC has issued a press release for an event.
