The Earthquake Research Department of Ankara, Turkey maintains computer catalogs and reports of Turkish earthquakes, some dating back to 1880. The Department also deals with earthquake preparedness procedures, mapping and zoning of earthquake-prone areas, and earthquake research, some on the international level through joint projects with other countries. The Department is divided into three divisions:

Earthquake Engineering Division
The main duties of this division are as follows: to provide the necessary measures for constructing earthquake resistant structures, and to provide and develop basic principles of rehabilitation of structures damaged by earthquakes.

Seismology Division
This division is responsible for the establishment, operation and development of National Seismological Observation Network and to carry out microseismic activity monitoring within the Turkish-German project on earthquake prediction. Thsi division is also charged with studying aftershock activities.
