The Seismic Safety Commission was established in 1975 to advise the Governor, Legislature, State and local government agencies, as well as the public, on ways of reducing earthquake hazards. It is an independent agency composed of 17 commissioners chosen for their expertise and experience. Fifteen of the commissioners are appointed by the Governor upon consent of the Senate, one commissioner represents the State Senate, and one represents the State Assembly.

Hard copy (guide books), compliance data and earthquake safety legislation are available.

The Commission has produced numerous earthquake risk reduction publications which are available for purchase by the public or by regulatory agencies. A complete on-line listing is available on the website, as well as summaries of the content for several of the publications.
