The British Geological Survey maintains the National Geoscience Information Service, NGIS. NGIS is a comprehensive repository for the majority of the nation's geosciences data and information based on geological, geophysical, and geochemical data both in the United Kingdom and overseas. NGIS provides the public interface to this data and is responsible for the provision of advice on geological matters and for the dissemination of data to end users. Some of the data dates back to 1850. Long term international data sets are principally restricted to the British Commonwealth countries. More recent data sets are worldwide.

Hard copy and digital files contain NGIS on-line information.

Public access to and management of the data held within NGIS are coordinated through the Information Services Group of BGS. Please refer to this page to determine the appropriate contact person and type of data available that best matches your request.
