The National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, New Zealand, was established in 1992 as one of nine New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs). NIWA's mission is to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources.

Areas of expertise for consultancy and research are Atmosphere & Climate, Freshwater, Coastal & Oceanography, Fisheries and Aquaculture & Fisheries Enhancement.

NIWA's corporate headquarters are in Auckland, the main research campuses are in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Lauder, and the field offices are in the smaller centres. Research vessels are maintained in Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch.

NIWA maintains the National Climate Database (CLIDB), a national repository of high quality climate data.
