The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) obtains meteorological data from tall towers located at power plants throughout the Tennessee Valley Region. Wind speed and air temperature are recorded at multiple levels. Dewpoint, solar radiation, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure data are also collected. Data is recorded hourly. Length of record varies according to location, with some records going back as far as 1966.

TVA obtains precipitation data from standard 8-inch and tipping bucket rain gauges located throughout the Tennessee Valley watersheds. Length of record ranges from 1934 to the present, and the number of gauges ranges from 200 to over 600. Data frequency includes hourly, six-hourly, daily, and monthly totals depending upon location.

Precipitation data are published daily, monthly, and annually as well as in summarized data in hard copy from 1934 to 1980. Unpublished daily totals from May 1980 to June 1982 are available in hard copy. Data are archived on TVA mainframe computer data base from June 1982 to September 1986, with magnetic or hard copy formats available. Daily precipitation totals from 1934 to present are available in hard copy. Six-hourly and daily precipitation totals from October 1986 to present are available on the departmental minicomputer data base and are available in magnetic or hard copy formats.

All data bases are accessible by TVA Engineering Data Services personnel during normal business hours. Clients are charged for materials and labor on a cost recovery basis.

The TVA meteorological database is also maintained on the Environmental Protection Agency's Aerometric Information Retrieval System. Magnetic, microfiche and hard copy formats are available.
