This failed column was a part of the collapsed Interstate 5/210 interchange. The interchange was a 7-span, non-prestressed, reinforced concrete box girder structure that completely collapsed in the San Fernando earthquake of 1971. The structure was carried on single column bents. The base of the column pulled out of the 6-foot diameter cast-in-place drilled shaft. At failure some hoops separated and pulled out.
