      <abstract>
        Extreme Wind Speeds is a historical publication archived
at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Extreme wind speeds at 129
stations in the contiguous United States was produced by the NCDC for the
U.S. Department of Commerce, National Bureau of Standards and published
under the NBS Building Science Series 118. The National Bureau of Standards
became the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. The primary
source of data used in the preparation of this study was the original record
of surface weather observation forms from which the recorded fastest-mile wind
speeds were extracted. This publication on microfiche presents narrative
descriptions and formulae utilized in the preparation of the wind data for
analyses, and the statistical methods used in these analyses. Data presented
for each of 129 selected stations are:
1) recorded (anemometer elevation) and calculated (10) meters above the
ground) fastest-mile wind speeds (mph), and
2) predicted extreme wind speeds for return periods of 2 to 1,000,000 years.
