      <abstract>
The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has, in archive, a historical
sea surface temperature (SST) data set from the international Tropical Oceans
and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program. The data set name is sometimes shortened
to TOGA SST. It is NCDC digital data set DSI-9679. TOGA was a 10-year study
(1985-1994) of seasonal to year-to-year, also called short-term, climate
variability. Of special interest to TOGA was the El Nino phenomenon -- unusually
warm sea surface temperatures and weak trade winds in the equatorial Pacific
Ocean -- which in the early 1980s was only beginning to come under serious
scientific study as it was realized that the effects of El Nino were global. In
response to TOGA, a global SST data center was established at the US National
Meteorological Center (which later became the National Centers for Environmental
Prediction); the purpose was to collect real-time ship, buoy, and satellite data,
and to use these data to construct analyses of monthly mean grids for the TOGA
time period. This data set is the result of a SST analysis which blends ship and
buoy data with satellite data. The following information is included: monthly SST
climatological fields; monthly SST fields (mean and anomaly), including ship and
buoy SST analysis, satellite analysis, and blended analysis; monthly SST data
distribution, including ship observations, buoy (fixed and drifting) observations,
and satellite number of observations (contoured on a two-degree grid); differences
between monthly SST analyzed fields of daytime and nighttime satellite analyses,
and ship, buoy and satellite analysis; and a table of monthly regressions between
drifting buoy SSTs and the ship and buoy SST analysis (drifters withheld),
satellite analysis, and blended analysis (drifters withheld).
