      <abstract>
        These data sets contain U.S. Navy hourly ship meteorological and ocean
surface observations, recorded on forms WBAN 11A and 11B. DSI-1117 data
began in 1951 and continued through the June of 1963 and covered the entire
globe. The use of this weather reporting was initiated June 1951. Fixed
weather ship three-hourly surface observations were initiated on this
form in January 1952, and continued throught the end of the period on record.
Observations taken while a ship was in port or near port were not used.
When an observation was missing or the ship failed to report for the entire
month, no identification cards were punched. Columns for which data were
missing, or obviously in error, were left blank. Major parameters included:
temperature, dew point, wet bulb, wind speed, present weather, visibility,
ceiling height, sea surface temperature, wave direction, and cloud types.
Effective September 1, 1956, ceiling and heights of high clouds were
reported as 888. When the ceiling and/or height of the cloud was a Cirro
type, the height was estimated.
