      <abstract>
        Rawinsonde 6-Second Data is digital data set DSI-6211, archived at the
National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). This data set contains radiosonde data.
High resolution 6-second data has been received at NCDC since April 1995 and
archived as digital data set DSI-9948, Six-second Upper Air Data. The
requirement to include the U and V components of wind has initiated this data
set, DSI-6211. The software to convert DSI-9948 to DSI-6211 was provided by the
Joint Office of Science Support (JOSS) of the Office of Programs of the
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). The software did a
format conversion as well as made some improvements to data calculations.
DSI-6211 has data from 1998 to the present. Geographic coverage is the United
States of America including Alaska and Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin
Islands, US territories in the Pacific, and nations in the Pacific hosting
offices of the US National Weather Service (NWS). Major parameters deal with a
typical radiosonde release and are time, pressure, dry bulb temperature, dew
point temperature, relative humidity, U component of wind, V component of wind,
wind speed, wind direction, ascension rate, longitude, latitude, elevation and
azimuth, altitude and various quality codes for each parameter.
