ASOS Special Inventory Hourly Precipitation Data is
historical digital data set DSI-3341, archived at the National Climatic Data
Center (NCDC). DSI-3341 is the daily inventory for the subset of stations in
data set DSI-3240, Hourly Precipitation Data, that are Automated Surface
Observing System (ASOS) stations. Areal coverage is the United States
excluding Hawaii. Years covered are 1995-8.

        HEADER RECORD

Station Identifier: (STNIDH) is an 8-character alphanumeric string that
uniquely specifies the station whose hourly precipitation data is
inventoried. The first two characters represent the state code, the next
four characters represent the cooperative network index, and the last two
characters represent the cooperative network division. These three parts
are described below.

The state codes are as follows:

01 Alabama 28 New Jersey
02 Arizona 29 New Mexico
03 Arkansas 30 New York
04 California 31 North Carolina
05 Colorado 32 North Dakota
06 Connecticut 33 Ohio
07 Delaware 34 Oklahoma
08 Florida 35 Oregon
09 Georgia 36 Pennsylvania
10 Idaho 37 Rhode Island
11 Illinois 38 South Carolina
12 Indiana 39 South Dakota

13 Iowa 40 Tennessee
14 Kansas 41 Texas
15 Kentucky 42 Utah
16 Louisiana 43 Vermont
17 Maine 44 Virginia
18 Maryland 45 Washington
19 Massachusetts 46 West Virginia
20 Michigan 47 Wisconsin
21 Minnesota 48 Wyoming
22 Mississippi 50 Alaska
23 Missouri
24 Montana
25 Nebraska
26 Nevada
27 New Hampshire

Station Identifier: (STNID) is a four-digit integer that uniquely specifies
the station whose hourly precipitation data is inventoried. This station
identifier is the COOP number and is assigned by NCDC. Station identifier
ranges in value from 0016 through 9941.

Year: (YEAR) is a four-digit integer that specifies the year of hourly
precipitation data inventoried. Year ranges in value from 1995 through 1998.

Month: (MONTH) a two-digit integer that specifies the month of hourly
precipitation data inventoried. Month ranges in value from 01 to 12.

Day: (DAY) is a two-digit integer that specifies the day of hourly
precipitation data inventoried. Day ranges in value from 01 to 31.

Element: (ELEM) is a 4-character alphanumeric string that specifies the
meteorological element type of hourly precipitation data inventoried. Element
has a value of "UNHP", Universal Hourly Precipitation Data.

Data Measurement Flag: (FLAG1) is a single character. Data measurement flag
has the following range of values:

a	Begin accumulation period during the hour.

A	End accumulation period during the hour.

NOTE: If this flag is used in conjunction with a Data Quality Flag (FLAG2)
of "!", this flag represents a "ghost" data value that falls within the
accumulation period.

[	Begin missing period during the hour (inclusive).

]	End missing period during the hour (inclusive).

M NOTE: This flag is used in conjunction with a Data Quality Flag (FLAG2) of "!" and represents a "ghost" data value that falls within the missing period.

T	Trace amount of precipitation.

b	(blank) No flag needed.

Data Quality Flag: (FLAG2) is a single character. Data quality flag has the
following range of values:

!	Represents a "ghost" data value. When the flag is used in conjunction with
a Data Measurement Flag (FLAG1) of "A", the "ghost" value falls within an
accumulation period. When the flag is used in conjunction with a Data
Measurement Flag (FLAG1) of "M", the "ghost" value falls within a missing period.

b	(blank) No flag needed.

Flag Pair Count: (FPCNT) is a three-digit integer that specifies the number of
times that FLAG1 and FLAG2 occur together as a pair for the given state,
station identifier, year, month, day, and element for the hourly
precipitation data. Flag pair count ranges in value from 001 through 048.
