<abstract>
The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and the co-located World Data Center-A (WDC-A) for Solid Earth Geophysics occasionally receive airborne magnetic survey data from non-US agencies. Approximately 242,000 vector observations covering much of Canada, the Nordic countries, Iceland, the Greenland Sea, Antarctic and the Japan Islands are currently archived at NGDC/WDC-A. The entire inventory of survey data is searchable on-line. The Canadian Scandinavian data contain over 130,000 high-density and 22,000 low- density vector observations. These data were collected and contributed by the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. Over 100,000 high-density vector observations collected between 1979-80 over the Japan islands were contributed by the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency. Other collections such as Project Magnet are also available. In an effort to provide a central library for digital aeromagnetic data in the public domain, the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) is continuing to assimilate new digital data from aeromagnetic surveys in the United States. The data, compiled from numerous individual surveys, have been added to a data base that now exceeds 900 surveys and spans 2.2 million nautical miles, a range of years beginning in 1968 and are available in several different formats. Altitude ranges are from 150m - 2500m above ground. Major contributors to this important data base include the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Minnesota Geological Survey, Oregon State University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Michigan State University. The details of these surveys are contained in an automated inventory system ARODAS. The philosophy of exchange of data from the NGDC archive for new contributions has stimulated many organizations to transfer their data holdings to the Data Center. N.U.R.E. - Department of Energy National Uranium Resource Evaluation These data were collected by various contractors between 1953 and 1994. The primary data parameter was radiometrics with magnetometer data being secondary. Flights were flown over the Conterminous U.S. and Alaska at 400 ft. A.G. with flight time spacing varying from 1.4 mile to 6 miles. A typical survey area in the continental U.S. is 1 degree latitude by 2 degrees longitude. The Alaska surveys cover 1 degree latitude by 3 degrees longitude. Details of these surveys are contained in an automated inventory system (ARODAS). The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Project Magnet has been collecting airborne magnetic data since 1953. The purpose of this project is to expand and update the data base used in the formulation of mathematical models to describe the Earth's magnetic field. Several worldwide surveys flown between 1953-1970 which are available as five-minute averaged vector data on magnetic tape from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). In 1976-77 a total field survey of the United States was conducted. These data, along with the subsequent global vector high density surveys, are also available from NGDC. The project magnet has collected over 7.8 million surveys and flights during the 1980's and early 1990's. The project Magnet program was terminated in 1994.
