<abstract>
        As part of the U.S. National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program (NTHMP), the Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) Project is an ongoing effort to maintain and improve the capability for the early detection and real-time reporting of tsunamis in the open ocean. DART stations have been sited in regions with a history of generating destructive tsunamis to ensure early detection of tsunamis and to acquire data critical to real-time forecasts. DART systems consist of an anchored seafloor bottom pressure recorder (BPR) and a companion moored surface buoy for real-time communications. An acoustic link transmits data from the BPR on the seafloor to the surface buoy. The data are then relayed via an Iridium satellite link to ground stations, which demodulate the signals for immediate dissemination to NOAA's Tsunami Warning Centers, NDBC, and PMEL. The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) serves as the archive center for this data and provides the historical data to users.

          This is the Pacific Marine Environment Laboratory's (PMEL's) buoy identification number. The Station ID contains letters (e.g. "AK") and numbers (e.g. "10"). For example, "AK10", indicates that the buoy was moored in the waters off of Alaska and was the 10th buoy installed. The prefixes used by PMEL are: AK = Alaska, WC = West Coast (e.g. off Oregon's coast), EP = Equatorial Pacific, HI = Hawaii, D = DART buoys (the name given to the most recent deployments), RT = Real Time (the name given to the TESTS of the most recent deployments)

        A DART system consists of a seafloor bottom pressure recording (BPR) system capable of detecting tsunamis as small as 1 cm, and a moored surface buoy for real-time communications. An acoustic link is used to transmit data from the BPR on the seafloor to the surface buoy. The data are then relayed via a GOES satellite link to ground stations, which demodulate the signals for immediate dissemination to NOAA's Tsunami Warning Centers and PMEL.

        The embedded computer system in both the buoy and the tsunameter was designed around the32-bit, 3.3 volt Motorola 68332 microcontroller, and was programmed in C. It was built to beenergy efficient for long-term battery powered deployment. The computer has 4 Mb of flashmemory, a 12-bit A/D converter with 8 input channels, two RS232 channels, a hardwarewatchdog timer, a real-time clock, and 512 bytes of RAM. The embedded computer implementsand regulates the primary functions of the surface and seafloor units: transmitting datacommunications, running the tsunami detection algorithm, storing and retrieving water columnheights, generating checksums, and conducting automatic mode switching.

        A Motorola 9522 L-Band Iridium transceiver from NAL Research provides data connectivity viathe Iridium Satellite Network. The buoy computer connects to the transceiver using an RS232serial port. Data is transferred at 2400 baud similarly to the familiar dial-up modem connections.A typical Standard Mode report takes approximately 30 seconds, including the time it takes tocomplete the connection, transmit the data, and disconnect.

The oscillator is attached to a Bourdon tube that is open onone end to the ocean environment10. The pressure sensor outputs two frequency-modulatedsquare waves, proportional to the ambient pressure and temperature. The temperature data isused to compensate for the thermal effects on the pressure-sensing element.

        The high resolution precision reciprocal counting circuit continuously measures the pressureand temperature signals simultaneously, integrating them over the entire sampling window,nominally set to 15 seconds. There is no dead period between the sampling windows. Thecircuit has a sub-millimeter pressure and sub-millidegree temperature least-count resolution.The reference frequency for the reciprocal counter is derived from a low power, very stable,2.097152 MHz, temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. A real time calendar-clock in thecomputer also uses this reference for a time base. At the end of each sampling window, thecomputer reads the pressure and temperature data and stores the data in a flash memory card.A 15-second sampling period generates about 18 megabytes of data per year.

        Each tsunameter has a Geometrics 900-45 tilt sensor mounted in the base of one of thehousings. This is used to determine the orientation of the acoustic transducer when the systemhas settled on the seafloor. If the tilt is greater than 10 degrees the tsunameter can berecovered and redeployed. The watch circle of the surface buoy could carry it out of the acousticprojection cone from the tsunameter if the angle from the vertical is too great.
