The data contained in these files contain hydrographic and topographic data collected by the CHARTS(Compact Hydrographic Airborne Rapid Total Survey) system along the Lake Ontario coast of New York. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collects and maintains LiDAR data including orthophotos in coastal areas of the United States and its territories. The Corps acquires this data in the course of performing its mission of flood control, navigation, environmental engineering, and
support for the Army and others. This is not a bare earth data set.
<purpose> These data were collected as a part of the National Coastal Mapping Program to depict the elevations above and below the water for the New York coastal zone. </purpose>
<supplinf>Incomplete coverage in files 01_H, 02_H, 04_H, 05_H of the bathymetric data is due to high water turbidity.</supplinf>

<procdesc> These data were collected using the CHARTS surveys system. It is owned by the Naval Oceanographic Office and Operated through contract. The system collects topographic lidar data at 20kHz and hydrographic data at 3kHz. The system also collects RGB imagery at 1Hz. A CASI-1500 hyperspectral line scanner is integrated with the system as well. Aircraft position, velocity and acceleration information are collected through a combination of Novatel and POS A/V equipment. Raw
data are collected and transferred to the office for downloading and processing in SHOALS GCS software. GPS data are processed using POSPac software and the results are combined with the lidar data to produce 3-D positions for each lidar shot. These data are edited using Fledermaus software where anomalous data are removed from the dataset. The data are broken into files, with each covering approximately 5km along the shoreline. The box layout index is provided by the shape
file, "ny_ontario_boxes", and the box numbers for labels are in the "Box" field of the shape file. An example of the file name is "2007_NCMP_NY_Ontario_03_TL_IGLD85.xyz." The last two digits within the file name corresponds with the same box names used to divide the NCMP data collected. The data were collected and processed in geographic coordinates and ellipsoid heights. The positions are relative to NAD83 in decimal degrees of longitude and latitude. The data were then
converted to IGLD85 using the VDatum program from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). </procdesc>

<procdesc> The NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC) received topo and hydro files in ascii format. The files contained Lidar elevation and intensity measurements. Both the topo and hydro points were classed as 'never classified.' The data were provided in Geographic coordinates and ellipsoidal heights and in IGLD85 heights. CSC performed the following processing to the ellipsoidal height data to make it available within the Digital Coast: 1. LASEdit was used to convert the ascii
formatted files to las format. 2. Both the topo and the hydro points were classified as 'never classified.' Hydro points were changed to class 11, 'water' and topo points were changed to 'unclassified.' 3. The LAS data were sorted by latitude and the headers were updated. </procdesc>

The data are currently being served via Digital Coastl at http://www.csc.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/. The data can be used to re-populate the system. The data are provided in LAS format. LAS format is an industry standard for serving LiDAR data. The data are exclusively in geographic coordinates,
however, the datums used vary. Most are NAD 83, however some are in ITRF. Vertical systems include both ellipsoid (ITRF and NAD 83) and NAVD 88. For NAVD 88 values, Geiod 03 is primarily used; however, data received in NAVD 88 prior to 2003 was processed using Geoid 99. </procdesc>
