Southeastern Aleutian Basin (Bogoslof Island) Acoustic-Trawl Survey of Walleye Pollock (DY1202, EK60). The Midwater Assessment and Conservation Engineering (MACE) program of NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) conducted acoustic-trawl (AT) stock assessment surveys in the Bogoslof Island area of the southeastern Aleutian Basin during the winter of 2012 to estimate the distribution and abundance of walleye pollock (Theraga chalcogramma). The surveys were conducted 5-15 March, departing from Kodiak, Alaska (4 March) and returning to Kodiak at the end of cruise DY1203 on 27 March; an intermediate personnel transfer was conducted in Kodiak on 19 March. The surveys were conducted aboard NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson, a 64 meter stern trawler equipped with acoustic and oceanographic instrumentation.

Kongsberg/Simrad .raw files are generated by ME70, EK60 or ES60 instruments. They contain power and optionally angular position data with each beam/frequency identified by an independent channel. See the Simrad interface specification manual for further information. The .wcd files are generated by Kongsberg EM302 or EM122 instruments. See Kongsberg documentation for more information.

The primary instrument for the survey was a Simrad EK60 split-beam echosounder system utilizing five frequencies (18, 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz). The EK60 transducers installed on the Oscar Dyson are mounted on a deployable centerboard. The transducer draft settings in the EK60 software are nominally correct when the centerboard is fully extended (draft correction setting is 9.15 meters below the surface). When the centerboard is in the retracted position (transducers approximately flush with the vessel's keel), the transducers are nominally 6.1 meters below the surface. The EK60 system was calibrated prior to the cruise on 14 February 2012 in Ikatan Bay, Alaska Peninsula, Alaska.

The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.

Oscar Dyson (DY)
the Oscar Dyson supports NOAA's mission to protect, restore and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources through ecosystem-based management. Its primary objective is as a support platform to study and monitor Alaskan pollock and other fisheries, as well as oceanography in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. The ship also observes weather, sea state, and other environmental conditions, conducts habitat assessments, and surveys marine mammal and marine bird populations.

multibeam
The Simrad ME70 is a high resolution scientific multibeam echo sounder
with very low sidelobe levels. It is dedicated for collection of data in the water
column. The multibeam echo sounder combines the large and flexible sampling volume of
the multibeam swath with the accuracy of the quantitative scientific echo sounder. A
bathymetric option is also available to provide a high resolution seabed mapping
capability, and the possibility to study the fish habitat.

singlebeam
The Simrad ES60 is an echo sounder capable of single, dual or split beam configurations. It is designed as a professional fish finder for fishing vessels and for fisheries surveys onboard research vessels. It can operate four echo sounder frequencies simultaneously ranging from 12 to 200 kHz, which allows it to both locate and identify separate fish species. Real time echo integration and target strength analysis in an unlimited number of layers is provided as well as storage of raw data for replay or analysis in post-processing software packages.
