Scientists from the Fishery Resource Analysis and Monitoring (FRAM) division at the NOAA Fisheries Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) and the Pacific region of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) conducted the Joint 2003 Integrated Acoustic Survey (IAT) survey aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) W.E. Ricker, a stern trawler equipped for fisheries and oceanographic research. Pacific Hake (Merluccius productus) aggregations were targeted along the continental shelf and upper slope of the entire survey area.
Hake populations were surveyed along a series of parallel line transects that in general were oriented east-west, spaced at an interval of 10 nmi apart, and traversed sequentially in alternating directions; The survey began from south of Monterey, CA (36.1°N) to the Dixon Entrance area, Canada (51.4°N) between June 29 and Sep. 1. All transects up to the Dixon Entrance and along the west coast of Haida Gwaii were completed. Sea depth at the inshore end of individual transects was nominally 50 m. Offshore extent of individual transects was typically at a depth of 1,500 m.

Simrad EK500 data logged in .ek5 format
1
Simrad EK500 data logged With Echolog 500. These files contain EK500 data telegrams output by an Ex500 on its Ethernet port. The .ek5 file contains binary Ethernet packets as output by the Simrad echosounder. The EK500 manual contains full details of the EK500 Ethernet telegram formats and should be consulted for interpreting the Ethernet packets recorded within an .ek5 file.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

NOAA Ship Miller Freeman
Miller Freeman (MF)
The Miller Freeman was decommissioned on 3/29/13 after many years of exemplary service. Pictures of the ceremony will be posted here when available - please check back soon. Miller Freeman was a 215-foot fisheries and oceanographic research vessel and was one of the largest research trawlers in the United States. Miller Freeman's primary mission was to provide a working platform for the study of the ocean's living resources. The ship was named for Miller Freeman (1875-1955), a publisher who was actively involved in the international management of fish harvests. The ship was launched in 1967, but not fully rigged until 1975. The vessel was again re-rigged in 1982. Miller Freeman was homeported at the Marine Operations Center-Pacific in Newport, Oregon. With a 12,578 mile / 31 day endurance, Miller Freeman was capable of operating in any waters of the world. Miller Freeman was owned by the United States of America, Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The ship was operated by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations and carried a complement of 7 NOAA Corps officers, 27 crew members, and maximum of 11 scientists.

The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.
