Count Component Title Abstract
1 CO-OPS 1-minute Tsunami Water Level Data CO-OPS has been involved with tsunami warning and mitigation since the Coast and Geodetic Survey started the Tsunami Warning System in 1948 to provide warnings to the Hawaiian Islands. After the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, CO-OPS was tasked to coordinate with the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers in upgrading existing stations with new Data Collection Platform (DCP) and communications technology and with expanding the tsunami warning capabilities of the National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON). Work began in 2005 to upgrade 33 existing water level stations and install 16 new stations from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea by October 2006. As of September 2006, all 33 upgrades are complete, as well as 15 of the 16 new installations. As of October 2006, the NWLON consist of 196 long-term water level stations along all U.S. coasts, including the Great Lakes, Alaska, Hawaii, the Pacific Ocean Island Territories, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly National Geophysical Data Center) serves as the archive center for these data and provides the historical data to users.

Count Component Attribute Description Content Type
1 Station: The geographic location at which tidal observations are conducted. Also, the facilities used to make tidal observations. These may include a tide house, tide (water level) gauge, tide staff, and tidal bench marks. See primary control tide station, secondary control tide station, tertiary tide station, and subordinate tide station
1 Sensor: An instrument which is of type pressure, acoustic or microware sensor used for measuring the water level.
1 Data Collection Platform (DCP): A microprocessor based system that collects data from sensors, processes the data, stores the data in random access memory (RAM), and provides communication links for the retrieval or transmission of the data.

    Count Component Identifier Descriptor
1 Station Id Unique 7-digit ID given to the Station where instrument was deployed.
1 Station Datum For marine applications, a base elevation used as a reference from which to reckon heights or depths. It is called a tidal datum when defined in terms of a certain phase of the tide. Tidal datums are local datums and should not be extended into areas which have differing hydrographic characteristics without substantiating measurements. In order that they may be recovered when needed, such datums are referenced to fixed points known as bench marks.
1 Latitude Latitude is measured from the equator, with positive values going north and negative values going south.
1 Longitude Longitude is measured from the Prime Meridian (which is the longitude that runs through Greenwich, England), with positive values going east and negative values going west.
1 DCP# Unique ID given to the DCP
1 Time The coordinated universal Time stamp at which the water level was recorded. It is in the format HH24MMSSZ
1 date The calendar date on which the data was collected. It is in the format YYYYMMDD
1 Water Level The water level value as collected and diseminated by the dcp.

1 2008-04-01T00:00:00 NOAA NOS CO-OPS increased the rate of data collection and transmission at all coastal National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) stations to 1-minute water level collection and dissemination of water level sample data.
1 2015-04-22T00:00:00 NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

    MI_Operation

Count Component Code Type Status Description
1 NOAA Tsunami Program The Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) of the National Ocean Service (NOS), an organizational element of NOAA, operates and maintains a network of approximately 200 long-term National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) stations as part of the National Water Level Program (NWLP) for the United States coast and in the Great Lakes. CO-OPS installs and operates short-term water level stations in support of a variety of programs including hydrographic surveys, marine boundary determination, habitat restoration, dredging, climate change, and long-term sea level rise studies. CO-OPS collects current data as a part of the National Currents Observation Program (NCOP) at locations throughout the United States. The data collected and predictions derived are used to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally sound maritime commerce. CO-OPS provides a set of water level and coastal current products. These include data and products required by NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) to meet flood and tsunami warning responsibilities and a national network of Physical Oceanographic Real-Time Systems (PORTS) in major United States harbors. The 1 minute tsunami data is collected either from the Aquatrak acoustic or Paroscientific pressure sensor and is used to detect, notify, monitor tsunamis once an earthquake or a landslide is reported. The water level data is collected every 1 minute and averaged using special algorithm but the data is transmitted every 6 minutes via Geostationary Observing Environmental Satellites (GOES) utilizing special data collection platforms. These installations and recent upgrades allow NOAA tidal stations to become an integral part of the Pacific and Atlantic tsunami detection and warning network. CO-OPS also has developed a web page for providing the tsunami information to the NOAA's National Weather Service Alaska and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers.
