The South Texas Outer Continental Shelf Project (STOCS) conducted by the University of Texas and the USGS with funding from BLM/NOAA. The USGS produced geochemical analyses of sediment and suspended sediment, clay mineralogy, and physical properties of sediment for 264 samples collected from October 26, 1974 to December 21, 1974. Additional grain size analyses are not included in the Seafloor sediment digital grain size database due to numerous errors. The University of Texas produced grain size analyses in the historic 073 format for 1647 sea floor samples collected from February 8, 1976 to October 18, 1977. Data include collecting institution, ship, cruise, sample id, latitude/longitude, date of collection, water depth, sampling device, method of analysis, sample weight, sampled interval, raw weight percentages of sediment, within a given phi range. Some samples also have percentages of total gravel, sand, silt, clay, and statistical measurements such as mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, and standard deviation of grain size. These data are part of the larger digital grain size database.

Supplemental Information
The data set consists of two parts: 1) MGG06105001 received May 28, 1976 from Henry Berryhill, USGS Office of Marine Geology, Corpus Christi, TX, in fulfillment of Contract no. BLM-08550-MU5-20, and 2) MGG03565001 received in 1985 from W.E. Behrens of the University of Texas, through Francis Mitchell of NODC, also part of the STOCS project. MGG03565001 contains grain size data for multiple cruises of the R/V Longhorn. Data set MGG06105001 contains multiple data types (grain size, clay mineralogy, and trace metals) with accompanying formats and documentation.

Lineage information for:dataset
Lineage Statement These data were contributed by the originator to NOAA's former National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and may be part of a larger compilation archived as oceanographic data by NCEI. Data for MGG06105001 were received in 1976 on nine track magnetic tape, ASCII form, 80 character records blocked to 4000 characters per block. File contents: 1) 073 data cruise BLM-STG 001-274 with gross errors; 2-4) grain size data not in 073 format, OCS-6001-G274, OCS-B016-G273, OCS-W107-246B; 5) Appendix 2; 6) clay mineralogy; 7) trace metals from surficial sediments; 8) trace metals from suspended sediments. There were 4, 423 records, 261 with analytical data from cruise Kana Keoki Oct 26-Dec 21,1974. Grain size data were not translated/added to the 073 format/the historic NGDC Seafloor Sediment Grain Size Database due to gross errors. The final copy of additional STOCS data, MGG03565001, were received on nine track ASCII magnetic tape in 1985 from Francis Mitchell of NODC combined with data from the MAFLA project. STOCS data comprised files 11 through 35 of the tape and included 15,175 lines of 073 grain size data with no major errors, so were processed into the grain size database.
