Substrate type percentages were used to create gravel-sand-mud classifications using Folk (1954) and Shepard/Schlee codes (see Hastings, Poppe, and Hathaway, 2000. Chapter 2 in USGS East-coast sediment analysis, USGS OFR 00-358). The SEDCLASS tool was not utilized; the classifications were done with a visual basic macro within Excel. The reason there are two Folk and Shepard classifications is 2-fold: 1) We could not repeat the Folk classification results that were in usSEABED, mostly because it appears that the %Gravel values were concatenated or rounded to the nearest whole number. Therefore, the "slightly gravelly" category could not be repeated (0.1% to 5% gravel). 2) We used the Gravel-Sand-Mud ternary diagrams, rather than trying to nest the Sand-Silt Clay ternary diagrams into the Gravel-Sand-Mud diagram. The Shepard/Schlee classification approach nests well, but in many datasets we don't have reliable sand-silt-clay information.
