Marine Geological and Geophysical
Data Management at NCEI

The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) are part of the US Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS).

NCEI's mission with regard to Marine Geology and Geophysics (MGG) is data management in the broadest sense, playing a role in the nation's research into the environment and providing data to a wide group of users.

NCEI is responsible for stewardship, archival, and dissemination of geological and geophysical data from the global sea floor and lakebeds. Data are compiled from both national and international sources through cooperative programs and exchange agreements, including through the World Data Center system.

Guidelines for Contributing Data

National Cooperative Activities

NCEI (formerly NGDC) is the data management lead for US exploration of potential extended continental shelf (ECS) areas, creates high-resolution digital elevation models in support of tsunami inundation studies, stewards NOS data in support of charting and navigation, and is the US National long-term archive for marine geological and geophysical data collected with US public funds.

International Cooperative Activities

In addition to operating the World Data Service for Geophysics, NCEI (formerly NGDC) also operates the International Hydrographic Organization Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (IHO DCDB) on behalf of the Member Nations of the International Hydrographic Organization, and participates in many international projects and organizations.
