the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples

Database Contents and Parameters

FGDC Metadata Record, Entities and Attributes

The Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples database (also known as the Core Curators' database) was designed by the Curators of Marine Geological Samples group in cooperation with the National Geophysical Data Center. NGDC has maintained the database on behalf of the Curators' group since 1977.

The minimum information included for each core, grab, dredge, or drill sample is: ship, cruise, sample id, and latitude/longitude. The combination of ship, cruise, sample id, and device is unique for each sample. Ship may have a value of unknown, as may device.

Database parameters have been modified many times over the years, and the lithologic classification system is usually under review. Recent additions to the database include IGSN number, links to corresponding information at participating insitutions, the USGS InfoBank, the MGDS, and the SIO Explorer.

For complete information about entities and attributes of the Index database, please see the FGDC Metadata Record. Also see coding information and diagrams.
