GEODAS Version 5.0.11 for Xwindows 3/1/2008 GEODAS Software is used to access the data on your CD/DVD product or GEODAS On-line Downloaded Data NOTE: GEODAS Software for MS Windows is much more robust, and includes more functionality. It is suggested that, if your system will run MS Windows, you should use that version: www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/gdas/gx_announce.Html NOTE: The only binaries for GEODAS UNIX version of software are for 32-bit Linux All others must build from source. Installing and running UNIX Xwindows version of GEODAS NOTE: For GEODAS On-line Downloaded Data and Grids: GEODAS application are somewhat limited in functionality for this data. NOTE: GEODAS uses the Tool Command Language Tcl/Tk 8.x You must have Tcl/Tk 8.0 or better installed on your computer. (It is probably already installed.) To find out how you can put Tcl/Tk on your computer visit these web sites: www.tcl.tk (Tcl Developer Xchange) tcltk.com/sourceforge/ (Tcl/Tk at Sourceforge) *********************************** Installing GEODAS Onto Your System: *********************************** 1. Obtain GEODAS for Xwindows Install software: On the GEODAS SETUP CD/DVD: /your-cdrom-path/setup/xwindows/install.tgz Or from NGDC web site: www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/gdas/gx_announce.Html Or from setup folder in untarred GEODAS On-line downloaded data 2. Copy or download install.tgz to your hard drive. 3. Unzip and Untar the file (this will create folder geodas_install) > tar -zxvf install.tgz some systems may need 2 steps i.e. >gunzip install.tgz and >tar -xvf install.tar 4. cd to the geodas_install folder. 5. Run the install program > ./geodas-install Respond to the program queries. Users will need read/execute permissions to the "GEODAS Executables" and "GEODAS Support" folders. Running GEODAS causes various data files to be created. These are written to the user's "work" folder. The default is ~/geodas/work but you can choose a different folder during installation. This can be changed later by running program geodas-setup (see Configuring GEODAS below). For some installations you do not have to install various inventory files. These include the GEODAS Coastlines (41.9 MB), Marine Trackline Geophysics Inventory (30.2 MB) and NOS Hydrographic Surveys Inventory (13.2 MB). This will save some disk space, but the software will run slower and you will need to mount the appropriate GEODAS SETUP CD/DVD when running GEODAS Data Search and Retrieval. 7. Delete the install folder (geodas_install) and file install.tgz. 8. If you do not have one of the operating systems with pre-compiled binaries (Solaris and Linux-x86 at this time) you must build the binaries from source. See file [geodas-support-path]/source/readme.txt for details. Note that GEODAS install must be run for each GEODAS SETUP cd which you have. At this time available cds include: Marine Trackline Geophysics NOS Hydrographic Surveys NGDC Coastal Relief Model Volumes 01 through 10 Great Lakes Bathymetry Vol. G1 (Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair) Great Lakes Bathymetry Vol. G2 (Lake Ontario) ETOPO2 Global Gridded Elevations Vol. E1 GEODAS On-line Downloaded Data Note especially that for the Coastal Relief Model and Great Lakes Bathymetry datasets, if volumes are on separate CDs, each CD volume must be installed seperately. Note especially that for the Coastal Relief Model and Great Lakes Bathymetry datasets, each volume must be installed seperately. NOTE: Once installed, you may configure or change some aspects of the GEODAS software by running program geodas-setup from the command prompt (see Configuring GEODAS). *************** Running GEODAS: *************** Start the GEODAS Launch Pad by typing geodas at the command prompt of your xterm window. >geodas (or ./geodas from [geodas-executable-path]/ if not in your PATH) Click the GEODAS icon you wish to run. These icons represent various GEODAS Applications/Databases. Note that only those programs and databases which you have installed will be visible. The GEODAS Applications are: GEODAS Data Search and Retrieval NGDC Coastal Relief Model Great Lakes Bathymetry ETOPO2 Global Gridded Elevations GEODAS Grid Translator GEODAS Coastline Extractor GEODAS Help System ****************** Configuring GEODAS ****************** After installing GEODAS you can configure the software by running program geodas-setup from the command prompt. > geodas-setup This will bring up the GEODAS Install/Setup program, the same program used for Installation, but with some options changed. This can be used to change your CD location, Browser Command, Print Command and the user work folder, and also to add additional GEODAS Databases. If you are the original "installer" this will change the main configuration file(s). If you are a user in a multi-user GEODAS setup, and have your own configuration file(s) in your HOME/geodas folder, this will change your "user" geodas.cfg file (see Note 2 below). Note 1: You cannot use geodas-setup to update the GEODAS software. To be sure that you have the latest version of the software, check the readme.txt files for exact version number, or always install all new GEODAS Databases from the GEODAS CD/DVDs. The latest software can always be found at: www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/gdas/gx_announce.Html Note 2: In a multiple-user GEODAS setup, if a user wants to have their own configuration file(s), they can copy geodas.cfg (and geodas.ini for Linux users) from the [geodas-executable-path]/ path to their HOME/geodas/ folder. This configuration file will be used when that user runs GEODAS. But remember that New Databases added to the GEODAS System by the administrator will not be automatically added to this "user" configuration file(s). The administrator should install any new GEODAS Databases and then the "user" can re-copy geodas.cfg (and geodas.ini) to HOME/geodas/ folder. ******************* Additional Programs ******************* There are 2 utility programs installed by GEODAS. Simply type the program name at the command prompt. geodas-gridlist will list the contents of a NGDC Binary Formatted Coastal Relief Model Grid. geodas-headutil will combine separate MGD77 Headers and MGD77 Data files into single file(s), etc. ******************** Technical Assistance ******************** Dan.R.Metzger@noaa.gov (303-497-6542) John.G.Campagnoli@noaa.gov (303-497-3158)
