Data Announcement 2003-MGG-02
The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Marine Trackline Geophysics data set can now be purchased on a single DVD disk. The latest DVD (Version 5.0.10) contains an additional 0.6 million nautical miles of bathymetry, magnetics and gravity from 234 surveys, added since the Version 4.1 CD set.
Also provided on the DVD is GEODAS search and retrieval software which runs under MS Windows®.

Marine Trackline Geophysics DVD Set
This data set contains all of NGDC's digital, marine geophysical trackline data and is updated on a regular basis. The data set consists of one DVD and contains custom menu-driven, GEODAS software developed by NGDC. Included on the DVD disc are "MGD77" Header- and Data- Records from surveys stored in a compacted binary format. The software gives you direct access to over 7 gigabytes of worldwide marine geophysical trackline data including bathymetry, magnetics, gravity, and seismic shot-point navigation. Access programs allow you to SEARCH the data by a combination of the criteria: data type, institution, geographic area, platform, year of survey, survey identifier, or date the survey was added to the system. After specific surveys are selected, the Header and Data records can be uncompacted from the DVD using the provided software and downloaded to the user's hard disk as ASCII files. The software can also produce trackline plots directly on the user's computer screen or as a PostScript® file for printing on a PostScript® printer. The software allows you to search the inventory for analog data which are also available from NGDC.
"MGD77" Format
The MGD77 Exchange Format (PDF) is a character-based exchange format for marine geophysical data. It is intended to be used for the exchange of data between cooperating marine institutions. Each file contains all observations that conveniently constitute a data subset (e.g., a port-to-port survey) and consists of both a Header Record and Data Records. The MGD77 format has been modified to meet Year 2000 compliance.
"MGD77" Data
The entire "MGD77" digital database is included on the DVD set. Surveys found by an Inventory SEARCH can be easily downloaded from the DVD disc to your hard drive. A context sensitive help System and complete format information is included. These data are also now available on-line for free. Use the GEODAS On-line Data Search and Retrieval System to Search and Download data.
"MGD77" Header Record
The Header Record documents both the content and structure of the geophysical data contained within subsequent data records. Documentation that is constant throughout the survey (instrumentation, reference fields, etc.) is found in specific fields of the Header.
"MGD77" Data Records
The Data Records present underway marine geophysical data in a time-correlative manner. Geophysical data (bathymetry, magnetics, and gravity) and seismic information (shot-point identification number) are associated with a corresponding time and position.
Software - GEODAS for MS Windows®
NGDC provides GEODAS (GEOphysical DAta System) software for
use with Microsoft Windows® on PCs. This window driven interface simplifies data
searches, guides users with an on-line Windows-style help system and supports
color postscript plotting capabilities. In addition, interactive search
capabilities enable users to select an area of interest by dragging a
mouse or defining an area with mouse clicks. "Zooming" capabilities
are also supported, with each zoom defining a narrower search pattern.
Once the user is satisfied with the search criteria, data can be downloaded
from the DVD in several user selectable formats. All search routines
are interactive and displayed as windows on a computer screen.
This user interface has a high degree of flexibility which is paramount
in satisfying a wide variety of user needs.
Additional Software for MS Windows:
- GEODAS Hydroplot - displays maps of bathymetry, magnetics or gravity data on the PC screen, coloring the data according to their value.
- GEODAS Coastline Extractor - downloads user selectable portion of coastline into an ASCII file.
FEATURES OF GEODAS Version 5.0.10 User Software
ENHANCED VISUALIZATION PACKAGE
Hydroplot, the visualizaton and interpretation tool for bathymetry, magnetics and
gravity data has been upgraded and refined to provide additional features for
MS Windows®, providing data editing, profiling and
histogram capabilities.
MS Windows® users can create shape files from downloaded data, for importing
directly into many GIS packages, including ESRI ArcMap.
GEODAS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Windows PC System Requirements:
- An IBM® PC or compatible with Microsoft® Windows(tm) 95 or newer
- A DVD drive with full ISO 9660 compatibility
- A hard disk drive with 9.5 Megabytes available for the GEODAS software
- Additional disk space will be needed to download ASCII data files from the DVD
Other Data Searchable with GEODAS and Available from NGDC
Analog Seismic Profiling Data
NGDC's marine seismic holdings include single and multichannel reflection data as well as seismic refraction
(sonobuoy) data. While the analog data are not on the DVD, digital navigation is available for many of the seismic data sets.
Analog data found by an inventory SEARCH can be purchased from NGDC as copies of the original analog records.
Digital Seismic Profiling Data
Seismic Reflection data in SEG-Y format is available for many surveys in the Trackline inventory.
This includes virtually all the seismic profiling data from the USGS Branch of Pacific Marine Geology and some surveys
from the USGS Branch of Atlantic Marine Geology. These data can be purchased directly from NGDC on a variety of media.
Marine Geology & Geophysics On-Line
GEODAS data and software are available via Internet using a World Wide Web browser. You can SEARCH the inventories, create and view plot files and download the marine geophysics data for free. To try out GEODAS On-Line, set your web browser to the following URL:
