Core Data from the Deep Sea Drilling Project

Leg : 67    Top/Bottom Interval(mm):    0/ 440  Analyst: Cowan, D.S.
Hole: 499C  Sample Midpoint (m)    :   260.44
Core:   1   Top of Core Depth (m)  :   260.00
Sect:  1    Top of Section Depth(m):   260.00

LITHOLOGY: PLAG-OL PHYRIC BASALT;

  Piece No.  : PCES 1 (0-4), 2 (6-8), 3 (15-20), 4 (24-26),
               5 (31-35), 6 (37-44);

  Texture    : MEDIUM GRAINED, PHYRIC, PCES(3 & 5 & 6) SUGGESTION
               OF WEATHERING RINDS DEVELOPED ON PARTS OF PCES;

  Alteration : MOD
               OL PHENOCRYSTS COMPLETELY ALTERED TO SOFT BROWN
               CLAY;

  Comments : ROCKS WERE PULLED FROM CORE CATCHER IN PART SO NO
               GREAT SIGNIFICANCE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO ORDER IN
               WHICH NOW FOUND- ORDER IS MOST LIKELY IMMATERIAL
               HERE SINCE WEATHERED EXTERIOR OF ROCKS SUGGEST THEY
               ARE A SUBMARINE TALUS, DARK GREY BASALT;

  Phenocrysts: OLIVINE                   (    5%)
               Size(mm):        1-3
               NOW COMPLETELY ALTERED TO ORANGE BROWN CLAY;

               PLAGIOCLASE               (   20%)
               Size(mm):       TO 5
               PCES(3 & 5 & 6) ON THE WEATHERED RINDS THE
               GLOMEROPHENOCRYSTS ARE LIGHTER AND MORE EVIDENT
               THAN IN THE FRESHER CORES;

  Replacement: CLAY
               CLAY IS SOFT BROWN;

Core:   1   Top of Core Depth (m)  :   260.00
Sect:  1    Top of Section Depth(m):   260.46

LITHOLOGY: APHYRIC WEATHERED BASALT;

  Piece No.  : PCES 7 (46-51), 8 (54-56);

  Texture : PCES 7 & 8 ARE SMOOTHER AND SUBROUNDED, WEATHERING
               RINDS ARE WELL DEVELOPED SURROUNDING DARKER GREY
               CORES, THE PCES ARE APHYRIC AND APHANITIC;

  Alteration : EXTENSIVELY;

  Comments   : PCES 7 & 8 HAVE PALE YELLOWISH-GREY EXTERIORS;

  Replacement: PYRITE
               TINY PYRITE GRAINS ARE ARE ABUNDANT AND
               DISSEMINATED THROUGHOUT;
