OCEAN DRILLING PROGRAM July 1990 DATA FILE DOCUMENTATION * Revised Edition SEDIMENT CHEMICAL ANALYSES GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY I. INTRODUCTION The Gas Chromatography data collected on the JOIDES Resolution are stored in two data files. One contains the gas analyses results (the GECE data file) and the other contains information about the instrument settings used to conduct the analyses (the Gas Chromatography Parameters or GECE_P data file - see end of this document for the GECE_P information). On board the JOIDES Resolution, three instruments have been used for gas analyses. The following table lists these instruments and the ODP code name for each one. ODP NAME DESCRIPTION --------------------------------------------------------------------- GC1 Hewlett-Packard 5890A Gas Chromatograph. For Legs 101-119, with option 820 [Natural Gas Analyzer (NGA)], two detectors [flame ionization (FID) and thermal conductivity (TCD)], and HP 10395A Headspace Sampler (HSS). Used for analyses of gases in sediments and vacutainer samples. For Legs 120-129, a "Booker" Natural Gas analysis setup was used with TCD and FID using packed and capillary columns with three sample loops. For analyses of gases in sediments (Headspace) and vacutainer samples. Measures gases and hydrocarbons to C6+. GC2 Hewlett_packard 5890A Gas Chromatograph with both FID and TCD which can accept either packed or capillary columns. For determination of low-molecular weight hydrocarbonsin gases and high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons in extracts. CAR Carle Series 100 Analytical Gas Chromatograph. For rapid determinations of C1, C2, and C3 in sediment gases and vacutainer samples.
