Earth Geopotential Model – 1996

Gravity Anomaly Data

EGM96 is a geopotential model of the Earth consisting of spherical harmonic coefficients complete to degree and order 360. It is a composite solution, consisting of: (1) a combination solution to degree and order 70; (2) a block diagonal solution from degree 71 to 359; and (3) the quadrature solution at degree 360. This model is the result of a collaboration between the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Ohio State University. Additional information is available from the NASA web site at: http://cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov/926/egm96/egm96.html

The four files containing the gravity anomaly data used in the development of EGM96 are:

  • na30min.dat - (nima.v060796.alt.min30.dt2) - Altimetry 30' values from NIMA
  • nt30min.dat - (nima.v091296.terr.min30) - Terrestrial 30' values from NIMA
  • ot30min.dat - (osu.v072189.terr.min30_mod) - Terrestrial 30' values from OSU
  • nt01deg.dat - (nima.v091296.terr.deg01) - Terrestrial 1 deg. values from NIMA

In addition, a file containing harmonic coefficients of the potential is provided. These coefficients may be used to derive “fill-in” values for areas void of any other type of gravity anomaly information. This file is called egm96s.dat (egm96s.to040.rti.f041t360.jgp95e).

The documentation describing these files is provided PostScript format format.

Please read the documentation files first. The data files are ASCII and instructions on how to read and interpret the information is given in the documentation files.

If you are unable to 'translate' either format of the documentation files please send e-mail to:

npavlis@geodesy2.gsfc.nasa.gov, or flemoine@olympus.gsfc.nasa.gov

Include your complete address in your message. A hard copy of the documentation will be faxed or mailed to you.
