NOAA Polar Orbiting Satellites is digital data set DS-3615, archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). This is meteorological satellite data. The Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES) system offers the advantage of daily global coverage, by making nearly polar orbits roughly 14.1 times daily. Currently in orbit there are morning and afternoon satellites, which provide global coverage four times daily. The POES system includes the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS), in POES satellites beginning with the original TIROS-N in October 1978, followed by NOAA-6 through NOAA-14. The latter was launched in December 1994. A new generation ofenhanced POES satellites began with the first NOAA-KLM satellite launch in May 1998.DS-3615 includes the following products:Global Vegetation Index (GVI) indicates the weekly condition of the Earth's vegetation. Produced from AVHRR, GVI is used as a tool to study continental patterns and global patterns of the Earth's vegetation. Available in NCDC archive are the Second Generation Daily, Plate, and Polar GVI products, and also the Third Generation B, C, and D level GVI products. Time period covered in April 1985 through January 2001. Radiation Budget represents the balance between incoming energy from the Sun and outgoing thermal (longwave) and reflected (shortwave) energy from the Earth. Shortwave and longwave surface radiative fluxes are computed on a 1 degree equal-angle grid with detailed and parameterized radiative transfermodels using meteorological data (clouds, temperature and humidity profiles, ozone, etc.) This data is produced from the low resolution Global Area Coverage (GAC) AVHRR daily data. Infrared and visible radiances are combined with time, earth location and angular measurements of satellite altitude and solar zenith angle as an initial data base for analysis. The heat budget parameters are derived and mapped into 2.5 degree arrays. Time period covered is October 1984 through the present day. Microwave Surface and Precipitation Products System (MSPPS) is dedicated to the retrieval of near-real-time operational surface and precipitation productsusing antenna temperatures from the AMSU-A and AMSU-B instruments on board the NOAA-KLM series of satellites. The current suite of MSPPS products are total precipitable water, cloud liquid water, rain rate, snow cover, sea ice concentration, ice-water path, emissivity, and land surface temperature. Other products in DS-3615 include AMSU-B soundings, ATOVS soundings, RTOVS soundings, aerosols, SBUV/2 ozone, SSM/T1 soundings, and sea surface temperatures.
To make a wide range of climatic data available to researchers and the public.
